metal detector for larger objects

I am constantly losing larger metal objects ( crow bars, chain binders, bolts, hitch pins, drag chains) in the tall grass as I move from one spot on my land to another. I think a cheap metal detector should be able to turn these up. I'm not looking for something small like a ring or coins. Is this correct and if so any suggestions? There is an old homestead on the land that might be fun to explore but that would be secondary. Thanks LJ

You will get what you pay for.
I have the Whites DFX and it has paid for itself many times in the 4 years that I have had it but it comes in at just over one thousand dollars.
I took it to Canada with me last winter but never seemed to have anytime to go out and use it. Was king of busy for 3 months.

You can got to http://www.dfxonly.com/forum/ to read up more on this metal detector and read what people who own one and use it to see what they say.

A cheap one will be alright to find things on the surface that is big but you could find something well worth while while looking for that lost object.

Hey Bob,

Do you use yours as a hobby or other uses? (any good finds) I bet those things would be interesting around old farms and where folks use to live. I bought one once when I lived in AZ cause I liked to roam around the desert, it was stolen before I even learned how to use it. I still have an interest in those things go.

I find a bit and some very good finds that I don't know anything about. And I didn't find all that clad last year that kept me in money to spend in machines.
I didn't find any of them gold and silver rings setting in the barn. I also didn't find any of those small metal toys around a few old abandoned homesteads with permission.

Now I tell you that I didn't pay for my metal detector again last year.. No I'm not admitting to finding anything, including some good silver coins.

You might check ebay...some good values on used machines.

There is also a place called treasurespot.com. Very cool site.

I bought a radio shack band detector at a garage sale for $9. I have found 3 dimes at the playground so far, but I was standing right over them, and they were only an inch down. I think it is a better machine than what I have found...I just don't know how to dial it in. Sure wish I had the owners manual.

Clove

A cheap unit

A cheap unit will fit your needs easily. You might also consider painting a swath of bright colored paint on each tool.
