HELP dog got sprayed by skunk

Well the dog got sprayed by a skunk about a little bit ago. I heard her barking like crazy and I opened the door and told her to get inside. she ran in headed to the back of the house and started wiping her face on the couch. That all took about 2 seconds. Then it hit me WHOAAAAAAA HOLY GUACAMOLE. It smelled like skunk and burnt tires all mixed together. I got her out immediately and put vicks under my nose, opened all the windows, lit incense and it still stinks to high heaven in here.

Ok so now I'm off to bathe her. I looked up skunk and dog and found a recipe requiring 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide. There is no where for me to get that. I have a few cans of tomato sauce, i have a small bottle of peroxide, i do have a giant box of baking soda. So what proportions would I mix of all this stuff and any suggestions on getting the smell out of the house? it's in every corner.

It will eventually wear off.
We did the tomato juice rememdy when our dog got sprayed. Mind you, it happened at our land which is ON HOUR away from homr so guess what our truck smelled like for weeks.
And I have to say the tomato juice was not much help. I'd use regualar deodorant soap like dial if you have it, then dilute the peroxide a little & rinse w/that. Maybe the baking soda would work.
Good luck.

Dawn dish soap, peroxide and coke is the most effective smell remover I've tried. The peroxide will probably lighten your dogs coat, but it should get rid of the smell.

My recipe says

1 quart 3% Hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 tsp. Dawn dish soap

Could you reduce the quantities to use your bottle of peroxide? Poor doggie, and poor you. I feel for you, friend! Good luck.

what i don't understand is I have a THICK blanket over the stair well. I'm upstairs now and it stinks up here too. anyway, thanks for the advice. I'm going to go get on it now. I have to work in this smell today (work from home) and the workers finally showed up to work on the roof (just got here). So we're all going to be stinky today. My stomach hurts too.

I"m off to get started - I'm so woeful.

Walmart sells a product in the dog aisle "odor ban" I think . Its a white plastic jug with maybe red letters it works the best . Odor gone ! You can spray the rugs and funiture also.

Last spring our dog got skunked. We used a combination of peroxide, baking soda, and vinegar,,,I'm not sure which one did the job but she only had a little smell on her snout that lasted a couple of weeks. Problem is she decided to try round 2 with the skunk a couple of days later,,,she lost again. We had to do the bath all over again.

Don't worry! You will get used to the smell. Others may have a problem tho.

We tried the tomato juice and a peroxide mix, and finally gave in and bought some stuff from the local vet called Skunk Away. It mostly worked. You could only smell the skunk smell when the dog wet, and that lasted about a year. Yikes. Smelly stuff.

As for inside the house, I would just really scrub anywhere the dog touched. The spray is soooo potent, it only takes a miniscule drop to stink up the house. So you have to scrub every bit of it off.

Good luck!

well just got done with round 1. I had a giant bottle of vinegar (use it in the rinse cycle instead of fabric softener), dumped 1/2 of that in a big red bucket with a can of tomato sauce, small bottle of peroxide. When I dumped in the baking soda (also had a giant box of that) it foamed up to the top of the bucket! I thought it was going to spill out, but it didn't. AFter the foam went down I got to work. She sat there on the tail gate of the truck like a good girl while I put that stuff all over her. It sprayed her in the face so I had to use my hands to get all the hair around her eyes, snout etc. She's a border terrier so she's VERY hairy and it's crazy hobo hair. I had 4 big containers of luke warm water to rinse her with. Whew what a job that was. She still has some smell to her, but it's not the grab you by the lungs smell like it was earlier. Now off to work on the couch. I'm going to spray it with water and vinegar. Thank goodness it's just an old junker couch we got at the resale shop. When you have animals, I've never found it pays to have nice furniture.

thanks for all the help and advise!

The problem with skunk is that in order to get rid of it you need to break down the oils and then rinse them away. A mixture of Biz laundry additive and soap (I use Simple Green) is amazing. The smell just vanishes. You can put it in a spritz bottle and de-skunk your furniture, clothes etc. For the dog I put about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of Biz (Chlorox II is the same thing but with perfumes) and about 1/2 to 1 cup of Simple Green to a gallon of warm water. The first time I used this I donned rubber gloves and full expected to have to toss them and the sponge I used. Surprisingly the smell was COMPLETELY gone. The only place that I couldn't get to was deep in my dogs ears. That we had to live with for a few weeks.

That very day my father fell and broke his shoulder. He lives 2 hours away and I just grabbed my coat and hit the road. Later I discovered that my coat had skunk on it so while I was at my dad's I mixed up another batch of B&G in a spritz bottle 2-3 TBS Biz, 1/4 cup simple green in a liter spritz. Took care of the smell instantly. With the remainder I started to clean his kitchen and couldn't believe how well it worked. That was 18 months ago and it's practically the only cleaner I use anymore.

Douche is supposed to work too. Spray it on and rub it in.

Love that Simple Green! Cheapest place to get it is in gallons jugs at Home Depot & dilute it yourself. Safe for septic tanks, too.

Well i might have to add that to my baking soda & vinegar arsenal. that's pretty much all I use now and buy it in the biggest containers I can find.

I've been there, twice, and I can tell you that nothing really works to get rid of the smell. You can minimize it, is all. The last time was worst. I went to work the next day and they sent me home cuz I stunk like skunk. That was AFTER repeated showering and etc.

What I did was, there are products at pet supply chains that specifically will help shampoo off the stink. Then I used tomato juice immediately after that. Then I spritzed the dog with aftershave to mask what was left. Douche is supposed to work, and a bunch of other stuff we have tried, but basically you just have to try to minimize it and live it down. On yourself, you can try using toothpaste as a hand and body wash. It works to remove or mute many smells.

In the house, I used Febreeze liberally on all furniture, carpeting, and Febreeze Fabric, plus Oxyclean, plus detergent on all my clothing, which all had to be washed -- some of it twice. My clothes hanging in the closets were the worst smelling. I used 2 gallons of Febreeze spray and a gallon of Febreeze Fabric that time. I bought hanging closet deoderizers and put them in each.

You are fortunate to have it happen now, when you can open up your home and use exhaust fans to air it out 24/7, as much as you can stand. My dog ran in during cold weather, and dashed to the bedroom to rub the bed! But I still opened the house during daylight hours. If you do not have an exhaust fan, buy one that will fit in the window. Get the biggest one you can find.

Last, remember that YOUR nose will get used to it before others. For the next 2 weeks, assume you stink, and avoid situations where you will be embarrassed. It was no fun to be told to leave work, after I thought I had it all under control.

I never let my dogs just run in the house after dark anymore. I always sniff around first.

One of mine got it this morning too. I forgot to check the live trap before I let the dogs out. He's back in the house thanks to Skunk Off! We keep a bottle on hand at all times. You spray it on, rub it in and you're done. It worked on the cat last week too.

both times i've used baking soda (1/2 cup) in a gallon of water, sponge it on & let sit till it dries. then wash w/ baby shampoo. two times through gets about 95%. you'll still get a little whif when you pat them.

my throat is closing up a little all of a sudden. Not much, but enough that it's noticeable. think there is some sort of delayed reaction to being around skunk funk?
