Junkyard versus civilization

Junkyard versus civilization - Homesteading Questions

Not surprisingly, the junkyard owner hasn't fared all that well fighting city hall. IMHO, junkyard owners that get surrounded by civilization through the course of time all take the same course of action: stonewall.
They would rather cut off body parts than get rid of their junk. For whatever reason, it is the mindset of those that possess junk.

This was a thread a couple of week back. Concensus seemed to be junkyard was clearly in the wrong as they had agreed with the city to take certain (and reasonable) actions which they have failed to do.

Mindset????????? It makes me sick that people who move into an area think the people that have farms, junk yards and anything else not to their liking should have to conform to the new ways. This man lost his living and should be fully reinbursed. Glenn

That doesn't look like junk - it looks like a very nice collection of spare parts and usable iron to me! I'd love to have a neighbor like that.

Guess that makes me someone that doesn't fit into the 'burbs.

Yes for some of us the recycle and re-use theory seems to be a mindset while others fill their trash carts and the local landfill with recyclables. Dumpster diving to retrieve "junk" I suppose should NEVER be done.

I noticed in the one photo that the fellow had a nice appearing '60s flatbed Ford truck that didn't even seem to have rust. Also a cabover truck that would have also brought some decent bucks.

Everything is trash if it can't be used immediately vs. junk that I'll use. Yep, it is indeed a mindset.

it is the mindset of a free man living his life the way he chooses all the while not hurting anyone, and not allowing anyone to tell him what to do.

You wouldnt understand how a free man thinks.

You are only interested in trying to control others. You have to much time on your hands. You need to be hungry so you have something to work toward, and keep your mind busy. Free men only busy their minds with their own concerns, and only with others when others are attacking them.

this is going on around the country, have a friend of the family who owns garage/junkyard. it sets at bottom of a hill, a state road runs above the yard. the county had told him he will need to put a fence up or remove all unworkable car on site. now the fence would need to be around 30 or 40 feet high so the yard cannot be seen from the road, the county knows it. the county is in a central location between to major metropolitans, land is cheaper and houses have popping up like crazy. and with the brac housing has not slowed down, so the county was about farming, now the county only cares about more houses being built.

it's all about the money.

Lets all buy a Mcmansion (holy C*** it was on my spell checker!) and move next to an airport, then complain about the noise.

That is known as free enterprize in America. HAHAHA no such thing. If there is no salvage yards or recycle places where will the new Caddys and Fords ,and all the other thing made from metal come from. The cities don't mind building a stinking waste water plant along a river so they can dump their treated water loaded with who knows what into it. This is a fine example of how families lose their homes and farms because some important person wants to live there. A drag strip outside Charlotte NC had been there 50 years or longer and along came these big fancy houses and they complained about the noise so he had to shut down. Some said he even tried to build low income housing on the site but he was barred from that also. We are puppets I guess. Sam

Warning. happy ending alert:

Friend of mine, owned an auto salvage yard in an encroaching suburb. City wanted to kick him out. City sent in a bean counter to assess the value of his business so that the city could buy him out. Bean counter told city that they didn't have enough money to buy him out. Friend kept put for 10 additional years while city raised money. Friend retired with more money than he knew what to do with.

Sam, the race track doesn't always lose that fight. Same thing happened here. Folks in big fancy, expensive houses tried to get KCIR shut down. Those folks did cause some problems with putting up a couple of pole barn buildings, but eventually the race track won. They do have a time they need to stop, at night, but it's still open and operating. i just can't imagine moving into a subdivision and NOT knowing there was a race track down the hill.

tinknal, now that's the way it's supposed to work. Glad it worked out that way for your friend.

you know what EF, if people looked at houses as home and shelter, instead of status symbols, they may would have notice the race track.

I live in Milwaukee and this is going on in other areas that were once rural and are now surrounded by housing developments. This is the second such case reported in the paper in the last couple of months.

The really sad thing about this case is that his property is taken, no compensation is given to him (not even scrap value for the metal) ,then they hand him a bill for the removal of his property and if he doesn't pay, they'll put a lien on his land and try to take that!

To top it all off, the owner is functionally illiterate, so the lawyers and politicians can spin him like a top. Maybe there is a special ring of hell for these individuals.

Same thing happening here in Maine. Farmers who kept scrap piles behind the barn and built woods vehicles out of spare parts and baling wire are being told to clean up because the office workers in the new McMansion next door are offended by the sight of rusty metal. I cannot comprehend why or how newcomers are allowed to dictate what happens in cases like that.

sounds like the people who build big expensive houses next to an airport and then file complaints about the noise from the airport. What ends up happening is the airport loses and ends up having to implement noise abatement regulations, usually in the form of some low altitude steep turns to avoid flying over the neighborhood and anyone who knows anything about flying can tell you slow flight and steep turns dont mix.

From an archeaological standpoint, a civilization can be be measured by their junkyards... I just made that up, but it does sound good.
