Ever been Discriminated cause of HS?
Ever been Discriminated cause of HS?
We recently were kicked off a message board because they were of the opinion that HSers are ignorant livin in the past dead beats who just want to kill animals.
Most people we come in contact with are very interested and have had many visiters. Most either don't care that our animals are food or ask to be left out of that part of the conversation.
We are not insensitive but on another message board we frequent someone asked about pictures of our goats and my DW posted pictures in the ANimal and pets forum area. Wife included brief decriptions of what the animal provides milk- eggs or meat.
I would not have made the distinction being it wasn't part of the original question, but she did.
The Administrator who is also the moderator was very offensive and down right rude. THis message board is part of an informative site with supposed true stories. An Email was sent to the owner of that site but it was kicked back as invalid. So we have regress.
Has anyone else gotten such a response to homesteading in general?
if it had been a Pet forum We would not have posted there,
if there had not been a question from another user there we would not have posted there.
it was within their own guide lines which state nothing about being vegitarian or a no kill zone.
For the record we do not take pleasure in killing animals and treat it with due responsibility.
Our animals are not pets they are live stock.

Those on that other board sure better not have watched Kid Nation the other evening as they were having to kill thier chickens to get enough to eat.
I would like to watch those on that forum survive if SHTF.

Not had discrimination on the internet per say, but definitely get the weird looks and comments from people around here. I live on the outskirts of a large city, and MOST people around here get their meat in little white packages.
The best response I have ever read about the whole 'raising your own' deal was this:
When a LWPT (little white packages type) says, 'You EAT your animals!!!! I could NEVER do that!' Just answer back - 'Yes, I do....' and with a look of total shock and incredulity ask, 'Whose animals do you eat?'
I actually find that we often have more in common with vegetarians than those who purchase meat at a grocery store. We raise our own so we know that our animals scratched and pecked at bugs, rooted in the mud, lay out in the sun, had dust baths, ate living food - and generally lived the life that they were designed for and their end was humanely and stress-free. Its hard to do, but it should be - and we appreciate it more. Many are vegetarian because they don't want to support the hellish conditions that mass production of animal products entail. I've had vegetarians tell me that they would eat meat if they could do it the way we do.

My favorite comment from the store meat eaters is "you eat your pets?"
I always respond with the answer, where ever did you get the idea they were pets?
We have pets, and no, we do not eat them. The pigs, lambs, and chickens are NOT pets.

I couldn't eat an animal that I knew as an individual. If I were homesteading instead of subsistence gardening I'd have to trade with neighbors. I'd eat their chickens but not mine.

Not necessarily on topic but one of my favorite jokes is......Man is visiting in Europe and the host announces that the main course of the meal will be beef tongue (rather expensive ($15/lb) and considered premium fare). The visitor with an insulting response replies "You expect me to eat something that came from the mouth of a beef?" Host replies " I guess not!" and replies to the cook "prepare him a couple of eggs"

the site looks like a big group of crazy libs. The title of the forum is Pets: then it says animal rights and such.
You were naive or just not paying attention. That site would be against such things.

(Still Mrs. Hoppes here)
It says:
Animals & Pets. From animal rights to pet stories and photos, come here to discuss issues that relate to our animal friends.
And, as I mentioned in my blog, e-mails, and PMs, there is nothing in TOS to excuse what happened.

I personally dont kill animals to eat. I have my killing done by someone else. I put out a hit on my hamburgers LOL
that said I was looking into getting some chickens. I was in Tractor Supply and I saw a husband and wife buying some chicken feed and decided to pick their brains some and ask some questions of them.
When I mentioned I would be killing and eating a few chickens along with eggs. The woman gave me the dirtiest look and said we dont kill our chickens they are our pets. We could never kill our pets. I jokingly said well maybe you cant but I sure could I love grilled and baked chicken.
She started turning red in the face and looked like she was about to explode there in the store.
her husband pushed her off quickly and said well we need to be running got alot to do today nice talking with you while she muttered something under her breath being pushed out the door by her husband LOL

A very quick perusal of the site made it very clear that posting livestock pics or talking of slaughtering animals would get you banned. "from animal rights to pet stories" in the subforum title makes it pretty clear. Why are you even remotely surprised.
You might try posting on the PETA and ASPCA sites too... sure you'll find just as warm a reaction.
When you visit a site and it's ideals are anathema to your own, do you stay? For the pain surely to be inflicted upon you? I may stay and visit, but I don't post, and I rarely if ever return.

Does anyone know when it became alright to care more about animals than people?

As a funny side note, I got some brochures in the mail from PETA recently with a full questionairre and them wanting me to donate money. It made me seriously wonder if they knew who they sent their stuff out too.

my personal advise, unsolicited i know and i appologize but id say to move on and let them do thier thing and you do yours. there aint no arguing with a "true believer" of anything and the quote from the mod on that board seems to fit the bill.
just my .02 and probably worth less but do you really want to give someone that dont really count in the big picture that much power over your thoughts?
