What ever happened to Steve Fosset?

Not sure if I have his last name spelled correctly? I never did hear if they found him/his plane or not? I missed the news that week. Thanks Chris

On the news last night, still nothing not even the plane. I don't know, Would it be possible to be in orbit? He has done some amazing things. Would be good for him to make it back ok.

I wonder if he just wanted to check out and live the rest of his life in Fiji.

I'd still like to see him walk out. Stranger things have happened.

I was wondering the same thing myself. Sadly I don't think he made it, however I would hate for this to turn into one of those Amilia Earhart mysteries...

According to the conspiracy bunch -
He was used as a cover-up for the nuke the USAF lost when they flew them from ND to LA (by way of Nevada, for some reason). One fell off the plane and they are supposedly searching for it and using Steve as a cover story.......

I was thinking of the Fosset story, too, and was wondering if he would have had a cell phone or some other kind of "signal" device on the plane that could have been picked up. The woman that was found after being trapped for 8 days in her wrecked vehicle was found with a signal from her cell phone, and you'd think he would have had something like that.

I saw on the news a couple days ago that they had plotted his course using satellites some way. Don't ask me how cause it is over my head. Anyway, they said it was around a hundred miles they would be searching more closely and it was very rough terrain.

Heard tonight that a renewed effort would be launched bases on new info. Maybe the same news that poppy relayed, don't know the details.

I suspect what they did was to examine satellite photographs taken at the time he would have been airborne. If they think they could see his plane in flight they could plot his position back to the ranch, then project a flight path ahead of him. However, that would assume he flew a straight course. Since he was looking for dry lakebeds he may have been flying over whatever looked promising.

The part of his looking for a place flat enough to try to set a new land speed record seems odd to me when the Bonnieville Salt Flats are perfectly suited to such.

He may well become a modern day Amelia Earhart.

Area 51

Perhaps he and his plane were swallowed up by an Area 51 event. Maybe he decided to drop in for a first hand look to see new technology that he might use.

This morning's local paper had a small article:

Reno Nev.
Dozens of searchers set off into the rugged Nevada backcountry Saturday after analysts scanning radar and satellite images spotted what may be clues to the whereabouts of Steve Fossett.

Nothing further, but this sounds like the first hint of any discovery of plane wreckage.

I thought the Gulch was somewhere in Colorado.

It's always the interesting people who disappear. The boring folks will be around forever.

I use to hold the guy in somewhat high esteem, for being such an adventurous guy....

However, my esteem has fallen... the most basic of planes have ELT's (heck, I've had them in my backpack when working in Alaska). The guy wasn't a cheapskate.... at the minimum I would have carried a Satphone... you can talk from anywhere.

If he crashed his ELT (early locator transmitter) would have been activated. If he survived, he could pull out his mobile phone, or satphone. To not have any of these basic items is suicidal.

so, I'm with Chuck... thinking he's skipped off to Fiji...

I was flying with a pilot this week who said he knows of some pilots who have taken the batteries out of their ELTs to use in their flashlights. The early ones were bad about going off while you were sitting on the runway or getting fuel. Some people disabled them.
