Snowbird homesteading

In 2003 Cindy and I did an all-inclusive to the Dominican Republic. I was intrigued by the possibility of setting up a winter place down there. Talking to the tour guide on our bus tour and on the Jeep tour I got the impression that a retiree with $3000 a month guaranteed income could live VERY well down there.

Is anybody familiar with the medical facilities and care?

Has anybody established an estancia in the islands and then come "home" to the states for the warmer months?

You'd be one of the richest people on the island with an income like that! Many make it on less than $1000 (from the states). One of my closest friends grew up there, and until 3 years ago, he told me people were going there for the winter from the states with 600 a month and living well. Haven't spoken to him about the DR since then. They have US trained dr's there; his dad used to be one of them.

If you want the Tropics Try South Texas The costs here Are pretty cheap. You have A lot of R V parkd and great Hospitals and close to Mexico. An hour or less to the Gulf. And most folks do it for less than A grand A month!

My husband is very interested in Costa Rica and has a friend that lives there. Supposedly you can live well there on $1,000 a month, which is what you need if you wish to establish residency. There are two different medical plans both of which are less than $60 a month when I last checked but they cover different things. Medical care is good and modern. I don't know if it would be available to part-year resident down there though. There are 3 different climate zones there and no army. Most Americans live in enclaves of US citizens and live a lot closer to the US lifestyle than the natives. There are lots of websites out there with up to date info.
