We put ours in containers and take it to the local garage. They also take used oil-- they have a used oil burning furnace. Maybe you have one near you that will take it??

Those that sell antifreeze are required to accept used antifreeze for recycling. Same for batteries!

Antifreeze, like oil, is very resiliant stuff. Rather than disposing of it, we put it back in a clean bucket or barrel and let the sediment settle out for a year, then reuse it.

Sweet tea or anti-freeze.

Decades ago I was taught that in a pinch without an anti-freeze strength tester (hydrometer) one could taste a sample of the coolant by dipping a finger into it and tasting it. If it was sweet the strength the sufficient and it too weak to provide freeze damage coverage it tasted bitter. I have tested the theory a number of times and the hydrometer always confirms the taste test theory.

Yes animals might find it tasty but for how many minutes before they writhe in excruciating pain and then keel over dead?

On battery disposal----with the price of scrap metals including lead being so high shouldn't they be bringing a pretty penny at a scrap yard?

I have read that some wastewater facilities accept antifreeze and use enzymes to break it down for safe disposal. If the enzyme breakdown works at a wastewater treatment plant , that would indicate that antifreeze can be composted in a controlled environment in addition to being collected for recycling.

Reusing old antifreeze isn't a good idea. The ph of the antifreeze and the chemicals that are in it from running thru an engine with all different type material can and will do damage especially to vehicles built in the last couple of decades. It can be recycled with chemicals added to it after filtering but basically not cost effective.
As stated places that sell it should have a collection tank.

Thanks! Back in the late '70s or early '80s they got up to $5 for a car battery and $8 for a larger truck, tractor, combine battery.

I for one would Never dream of tasting it! We had a suicide in the area last year, drank antifreeze. EMT's could not have saved him if they had been there when he did it.

they do have some treatments i was reading an aticle that a ER doc came up with the idea to use a black light to see if the patients urin floreses diagnosis had always been the problem they see a very high acid content in the blood but have to know it was anti freeze to treat it.

quote from medterms.com

Antifreeze poisoning: Poisoning from antifreeze which today is usually ethylene glycol -- a clear, colorless, odorless liquid with a sweet taste -- that can produce dramatic and dangerous toxicity.

Ethylene glycol is found most commonly in automotive cooling systems, and hydraulic brake fluid. In an industrial setting it is also used as a solvent and in a variety of processes.

Many cases of ethylene glycol poisoning are due to the accidental ingestion of it by children. They may take in large amounts since the substance tastes good. Alcoholics may also drink it as a substitute for alcohol (ethanol).

Ethylene glycol is itself relatively nontoxic. However, it is metabolized (changed) in the body by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase into glycolic acid, glyoxylic acid and oxalic acid, which are highly toxic compounds.

Renal failure, acidosis and hypocalcemia may follow the intake of ethylene glycol. There can be widespread tissue injury in the kidney, brain, liver, and blood vessels. The result can be fatal.

The traditional treatment of ethylene glycol poisoning has been ethanol which competes for the attention of the enzyme (as a competitive substrate of alcohol dehydrogenase) and hemodialysis which removes ethylene glycol and its toxic metabolites from the blood.

A new alcohol dehydrogenase inhibitor, fomepizole (brand name: Antizol), was approved in 1997 for the treatment of ethylene glycol poisoning in patients at least 12 years old. It has also been used successfully with younger children

In VA, the county Waste Transfer Stations have a drop-off point for hazmat such as motor oil, paint, solvents and antifreeze.
