what would you use to put

a 2x4 into the ground....thinking i cannot use hammer/sledgehammer because it will screw up the wood. It's for DH business sign..it's mounted on 2x4's. so they have to be buried somewhat. Ideas?

TIA!

A shovel? I guess I don't know if I'm missing something, but I would just dig a hole and then back fill. Of course you will have rot eventually.

I assume you are using them like posts? Drive some heavy steel pipe in using a post pounder and set the wood into the pipe

If possible, water the ground to soften it up first. If you're not going very deep, you can put a board sideways on top of the 2x4. Hit it with a heavy hammer, and it won't damage the sign.

I would pound in a couple of iron T-posts and strap the 2x4 legs to the posts with hose clamps.

When I drive 2x4's I use a saw and make a point on the end and then hammer into the ground.

With all the love I can give,, I pray this sign is not for a construction company!
Post hole digger, a little quickcrete and H2O, do not forget about a 4' level as well!

Cut a point on the lower end and put a 1/2" chamfer around the top of each post - then the posts won't have the tendency to split when you pound them. I use a 'knockabout' post driver - its large enough to drive a 2 X 4.

If the legs on the sign are not treated lumber, I'd cut them off and add on a piece of treated wood for the portion that will be in the ground.

Then I'd dig holes with a post hole digger. The larger the sign, the deeper they will need to be to stand up to wind
