Vacation in Ohio soon

I am going to Ohio in a couple of weeks. My wife is from Columbus so we are going there. We are going to Kidron to see Lehman's. I want to look at the stoves, hold a scythe, etc. We will drive the countryside and hopefully see some leaves. I love rural museums and Amish type stuff if it not too commercial. Any ideas of places I should see?

I found this site almost too helpful for planning our vacation there (next summer).

I love Heini's!! Ya can fill up on samples!! LOL

Canton - Football Hall of Fame

Cleveland - Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (Definitely worth a trip if you're willing to go 70 or so miles north of Kidron. The Science Museum is next door and it's really interesting - kids love it!

Lucas - Malabar Farm http://www.malabarfarm.org/index.cfm

PS: James meant Mt. Hope... If you can plan a trip back the end of March, you can catch the exotic animal auction... Zebras, camels, elk, monkeys - ya just never know what's gonna show up

If you go to Kidron on Thursday, you can catch the auction (Livestock at 11:00 am I think) - it's across the street from Lehman's. Good for a half hour or so if you're not bidding. There's a restaurant nearby that has fairly decent food.

Hocking Hills, Old Man's Cave in particular. Lovely area and should have some color by October. In the Columbus area there is the zoo and Franklin Park Conservatory. FPC charges admission (closed Mondays) but you can wander the grounds for free. I've heard the zoo parking has improved in the past couple years and the animals are in more realistic settings than even 5 years ago. And there is Olentangy Indian Caverns if you like caving.

If you do go down toward Hocking Hills, be sure to stop in Laurelville at the Laurelville Fruit Co. Raw cider with excellent flavor and decent prices.

Almost forgot, if you like chocolate the Anthony Thomas company gives tours of their production facility.

Also (real) close to Kidron is Smuckers. http://www.smuckers.com/jm_smucker_c...re/default.asp

They are located in Orrville.

If you are going to MAlabar farm you might want to try stopping at Fin, Feather and Fur (on 250) - nice hunting, fishing, camping store.

If you're going to Lehman's, you simply HAVE to go to Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen, which is only a short drive away. Here is a link to more info:

http://www.amish-heartland.com/amish/article/2497372

This restaurant is also listed on brochures available at Lehman's or I'm sure someone at the store can point you in the right direction.

Hope you have a nice trip!

Country Doc,
Please let us know what you thought when you get back. I am planning a trip to Lehman's in early November. It will just be a Fri/Sat or Sat Sun trip, so maybe we can take in a couple of the sites.

You're right Mike.

You know I don't think enough people appreciate our part of the country. At our local fair last week I met a man from Australia. He said he has traveled all over the world and has decided to settle in this area..he said it -to him at least- had the most to offer of any place he has ever seen. In a matter of a couple of hours we can be at the beach... or the mountains... Amish country...big farms or major cities (Cleveland,Pittsburgh,or Buffalo).

Let us know how you trip goes Country Doc..hope you have a GREAT time in our neck of the woods.
