homeowners' insurance

A recent thread caused me to wonder about property (homeowners') insurance - seemed like an opportunity for a poll...

I'm scratchin' my head that less than a third of the folks that have viewed this thread have responded by voting - unless of course folks that have voted are coming back....

We don't carry insurance on anything other than what's required by law, so for us that is liability insurance on our vehicles only. We don't have any loans or mortgages.

I think insurance is a scam. We used to carry it.

I am tired of jumping through their hoops while they hold too much of my paycheck hostage. Give me just one more problem and I will pay off the mortgage and quit playing their power games.

unfortunately, we feel as if we have to carry ins., here. With everyone in this country lawsuit-happy, and the courts seeming to allow it (if not encourage it), we're not williing to lose everything we have if someone decides to do something stupid on our property. There just doesn't seem to be any accountability, anymore.

We have liability only insurance carried through the State of NJ for now as the truck is my DH's and he hasn't transferred his license or moved here yet. For the first time is YEARS, we have no health insurance...and we were required to have renters insurance at our last home, which I think is a great idea. I just have to be able to come up with the money to get it here as soon as possible...

No insurance ???????

why in the world would I want to work all my life and then take a chance on some idiot sueing me and losing ever thing. Or haveing another tornado we have had two here on the farm.
Sure its expensive, they have their rules, but not to have it is not a good idea. But if you don't have anything to lose you probably don't need it.

some of these comments remind me of an ad they're running on the radio here recently.

"Hi, I'm a gambler. Though I never buy lottery tickets or go to casinos. I gamble because I don't carry health insurance..."

These type of ads annoy the s**t out of me. As if I need yet another bill sucking my hard earned money away. Its bad enough we MUST carry car insurance, house insurance (mortgage), etc.

This is Precisely how people end up homeless. Its not the lawsuits, its the "paying for the whatifs".. Heres one.. What if Its a choice between food or health insurance? Sorry but I value my food over something I'll never use, and probably wouldn't pay out if I needed it.

Granted I admit I do have health insurance. I pay $900 each year for a policy that covers me and my family. 'Full' coverage with co-pay for drugs and treatments. My wife has had three heart attacks, and each time she spent one week in a cardiac ward. Almost all of each hospitalization was covered by the insurance policy. And it is much better of recent. My health coverage for many years never included seeing anyone trained in medicine. I only saw medics. My wife only saw medics. My children only saw medics. Now on the other hand we each see doctors who have been to college, so it truly is much better. And I like this health insurance setup. So I pay my $900 each year.

I do own apartment buildings, in big cities where tenants come and go, where folks come and go, where crime and filth and ick happens every day, hookers, drugs, shootings, rapings, and thievery is everywhere. Those properties are insured. And it would be stupid to go without insurance there.

But now I live out rural. In an area where everyone leaves their car keys in their car. In the winter, everyone leaves their car running while they grocery shop, or go into the post office. Our house has no door lock, and the big 'crime' each week is written in the town newspaper and is usually the town drunk.

It is all about perspective.

I have lots of insurance coverage on everything here in a rural area - house, property, full coverage on 3 older vehicles, and health insurance (V.A., my Federal Industrial Worker's Comp. coverage, and private).
I hate to think if someone who wasn't covered - had a devestating event!! What would they do then????

ET1 SS - That rental property of your's - sort of sounds like it may be located in Deepest Darkest Detroit!!!

After having had a lightning strike that cost $11,000 in repairs I can't see why anyone would be without homeowners insurance. Tornados, earthquakes, hail, wind, meteorites, lightning, fire, heavy snow, anything could happen and you would be homeless. Not for me, I like the peace of mind that comes from having insurance. I realize the meteorite thing might be a bit far-fetched but I have known people who have suffered great losses from all the other things. House payment or no house payment, if it all gets blown away what do you plan to do?

We've suffered a few devasting events without insurance, and made it through.

Insurance is, in my opinion rather like "job security". A joke. So your house gets destroyed. Do you realize the chances that insurance company will find a reason NOT to cover it?

Just ask all the residents in Florida, New Orleans... California..

They have so many loopholes it isn't funny. The same goes for medical, theft, lawsuits, you name it.

PCDreams is right, insurance is gambling, plain and simple. I'm not much of a gambler.

Just another necesary evil. Living in a wild fire area, I think it's a necessity. I'm too old & too poor to be able to replace what I have. If I have a heart attack - absolutely no way.

Ahh, the optimism of youth.

Food for thought: So, all of you who don't/won't carry insurance? Are you voting for Hillary with her Billion dollar manditory health care......?? We'll ALL pay for it.

We have property insurance only. We'd have liability if we could get it, but we own a German Shepherd and they're on the list of "reasons you can't get liability insurance".

COULD we rebuild if disaster (lightening, fire, flood, hail, etc.) struck? Probably. But it's worth the payment to know that IF something like that happened, we are taken care of.

We haven't ever had to use our homeowner's insurance, but we have had great luck with health and auto insurance. Prompt service, made sure we were happy, no loophole excuses.

All I know is that 5 years ago a hose to our washing machine broke while I was on vacation. Had 6" of water run out the door when we opened it. The crawl space was completely filled. Insurance paid all but $500. They even paid for the suite for us to stay at while it was being repaired. The bill at the end was about twice what I paid for the house.

Then last year I got sick. Had to spend my first night ever in a hospital. Over the next 6 months I spent 27 nights there. The bill for all my treatment has come to over $150,000. I've paid about $5000. They paid the rest.

If I had to pay for either of these I would have been bankrupt!

We are covered all the way down to the livestock. We also have extra liability insurance.

Relative to what we spend on everything else all year, insurance isn't a bad deal and it sure comes in handy when a storm drops a big tree on top of the barn.
