Anyone in rural Nevada?

This is on my list of places to think about moving to. Anyone got any good info on good places?

My needs are....rural, close to lots of public land, gotta be cattle ranching going on somewhere in the vicinity.

My wants are....decently mild winters (I'm in IL now, but I'd like to be able to go outside in the winter with less than 50 lbs. of clothing), reasonable property prices, within 50 miles of a decent sized town (10-15K population or so).

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jena

I'll ask my ex husband and his wife...they live in Carson City and she grew up in Nevada. Maybe somebody here does live in Nevada

I live just outside of Reno. We are looking south of Hawthorn. There are several little towns out in the middle of the desert. Mina and Luning. Pop. less than 200 per town, and about 150 miles from any semi-large town. When I was trucking, I stopped there all the time at a small bar. The locals told me that even tho it looked dry, you could hand dig a well and get water at 8 or 10 feet. It is kinda down in a bowl, so the weather is warmer than surrounding areas and gets more rain than the Reno/Carson area because it catches the tail end of the monsoons coming from way south. Land is cheap, but there is not much work. For retirement, it will be great. I'm looking forward to getting out of Reno and moving. Will be another few years, or less if I get lucky.

I have a friend who just moved up there and she loves it. Sure is pretty country up there but I would be concerned about the water issues if you have animals.

I'm leaving Wyoming in Mid October and think I'll drive around Nevada a bit to see what's there. Any suggestions? Got the "north or Wendover"...

Thanks
Jena
