Ground hornets

What kind of animal would unearth but not destroy a basketball sized ground hornet nest at night in CT?

Skunk?

As far as the bears, it could be just about anywhere in CT. They're being spotted in more and more places. I have not seen any sign of bear on the property but a coworker spotted one about a mile away.

My guess would be a hog or a bear. I'm thinking that if you left it be the critter will come back when it's cold enough to slow down the hornets and eat them.

A very, very brave one. Far braver than me, which isn't saying much. But I would suggest, if it is willing to dig up hornets, try real hard not to get it upset with you!!

I had a nest in the middle of the pig pen one summer. The pigs avoided them all summer, then dug them up and ate them the first frigid morning of fall.
