My apple trees are blooming.

Is this some kind of a bad omen? Seems like last year this time of year they bloomed and someone mentioned a saying that means a cold winter is coming. On this site I believe. And last winter we had one of the worst winters ever. I hope that doesn't mean we're in for another big doozy again!

Some of the apple trees are blooming here now also, others bloomed last January and have been green since, its crazy.

None of them made apples this years.

Other plants are blooming now also completely out of season.

Just a thought - I wonder if it is possible to "knock them back into cycle" as it were by pruning them at a different time. I have no idea of where you are or when you would normally prune, but I am thinking maybe you could fool them into coming into a blossom at the right time again in the spring?

Have all of you been in a drought situation and finally gotten water?
Or have you been flooded and finally gotten a break from the deluge?
Did your apple trees bloom in the spring when they "should" have?
Did any of them make any fruit?

I have NO answers, but I sure am curious! Our apple trees bloomed in the spring and produced fruit. Most of it has fallen but some is still on the trees. We didn't pick it because it's been so dry here the fruit was tiny.

No, mine haven't produced any fruit for the fall blooms and no we haven't been having any droughts. We are something like 19 inches above average rainfall so far this year. Our apple tree's did bloom last spring but the late freeze we had killed all the blooms. So we didn't have any apples this year. Hopefully next year. It's been a fruitless summer this year around here.

Maybe that's it - we had a late freeze but the apple trees hadn't bloomed yet. So we got normal blooms and a normal crop (but small).

Maybe your trees are "recovering" from that late freeze that destroyed the normal crop.

Yup, we had a late frost that almost killed all the trees. No fruit from anything this year. Then we had a drought. Now we're getting a little rain and the trees are blooming.

Same thing happened last year after a summer drought and then rain. I've seen it happen before.

Pears have also done it in my yard elsewhere. And I've read some areas they strip apples of leaves (Mexico low labor costs) to induce an extra season or to imitate chilling hours stress so apple is fruitful at higher temps than usual.

I noticed this with my asparagus as well. We were having a drought and then got some cool weather and rain. Now I'm getting asparagus again. YUM!!
