Driveway Alert System

I am tired of having people come up to my gate, the UPS (et al) truck deliver, etc without my knowing it. I recently lost the dog that I depended on to listen for his bark to tell me someone had come.

Has anyone had any experience with the wireless alarms especially the one below:

Reporter RWA-300R

It sells on Ebay for about $65.00 including shipping.

I did have one for a while. I liked it! Not sure of the make now, it was around $100. It quit working and I haven't really checked out why, can't afford a new one, but yes, it came in handy many times.

Get some guineas. For $65 you can get about 13 of them. That would be a great alarm system.

Not sure what brand or anything it is but my grand parents has a drive way alarm. It beeps when ever someone crosses the 2 post by the road. It seems to work great.

Don't have any experience with that one. The one we have is from Harbor Freight for $20. It works OK for me. If it dings and the dogs don't bark I chalk it up to chickens or maybe the wind if it is blowing the right way. If the dogs bark I go check.

The one I referenced has a 1200 foot line of sight range and is capable of monitoring 4 gates at once, each with a different alert tone. All of my gates are withing this 1200' range. This one is sensitive enough to screen out animals of dog size and smaller. It will pick up infrared from humans though so I guess it will pick up deer too.

That's right, quineas will squawk when anyone pulls up to your drive, and when the wind blows, and when the wind doesn't blow, and when the sun comes up, and when the sun goes down, and when the dog wakes up, and when the dog goes to sleep, and when there are lots of grasshoppers in the field, and when all the grasshoppers are eaten ...

And they will eat all the ticks.

But, in the end, you'll still have guineas.

We're on year 3 with our $20 Harbor Freight model and love it. It beeps in the wind and sometimes beeps at birds, but tells us about every visitor and deer that comes in.

I want to go the guinea route but am not sure how to do that without having them picked off by predators around here.

We've been worried about mother on her own at the homestead and wanted to get her a driveway alarm system. The ones I've seen were very simple - had a laser with a reflector and when the laser was interrupted (didn't get bounced back from the reflector because something disrupted the beam by passing through), it sounds a wireless doorbell. The trouble is that we wanted a fairly long distance (600'+ feet) for transmission and we didn't look real hard for one that was sufficient.

If you have a gate across that drive road, then UPS, or anyone else will have to stop behind it waiting for your decission for admittance.
And if you have a real guard dog behind that gate, noone will come knocking, either.

I feel your pain. I too have them and wish I didn't. I can't count the times I've ran out from the house to check their "alarm" only to find it was false.

I quit checking on them now.....and they are still there..like the energizer bunny.

I have been looking at the rubber air-hose models, someone has to drive over it to trigger the alarm. We would need it with at least 300' of cable.

With so many of our goats, the deer and moose, I think that the laser beam would be getting triggered many times each day. Our goats alone will be browsing and will follow the driveway to the end and begin to work their way up either side of the road browsing in the ditches. One of them gets stung by a mosquito and they all come running home again. With them going down there, and back again a dozen times a day. A laser beam would be triggered a lot.

There are wireless sensors that only sense metal. I bought mine at drivewayalarms.com or something like that. They're supposed to be mil spec.

We have had the Driveway Alert by Miltronics for almost 3 years and it works great. My mother got a cheap alarm that didn't work good. Don't remember what we paid, but is well worth it.

http://www.smarthome.com/7317.html

I read all of the reviews and they are mixed as to satisfaction. As I have a need for long range detection and reporting I think I will pass in favor of a different model.
