Is it not okay to open spam emails? I always thought it was okay to open them, but not okay to click on any links or dowload any attachments. I just delete the obviously spam emails but some I do open(when I'm not sure if the content is legit or not).
I used to get a lot of homestead related emails because I was signed up at different Yahoo groups that were homesteading related. Maybe that's how you got it?

Quick look in the military email directory I see there are 3 Patricia Whites in the Army Reserve on Unclass email.

Other than that, I wouldn't recommend opening email from people I don't know.

Could be her email server got hit wih a zombie attack and was hijacked to send out spam.

Opening the email *could* tell the sender that the address is valid thus causing more spam.
