Accent food spice.

The wife used a small can off our shelf and really liked the Accent food spice. She asked me this am on my Sam's Club venture to see if they had a larger can. They did. A very large Huge in my opinion can. The price was kinda high to me for a spice. I took a look at the can to find it only ingrediant is MSG. It is MSG.

I know very little og MSG, just recalled it is bad for some reason? I got a differant ingreadiant call Spike. It had a ton of spices. Once home I looked it up as well. Looks like it may contain a trace of MSG.

I never really got a answer why MSG is so bad other then some folks are allergic to it.

Any thoughts on this?

It was believed at one time to trigger migrane headaches, but this has been largly dispelled. Here is an interesting PRO-MSG link....http://www.msg.org.au/main.html

Personally, I think the stuff is fine! I use it and have never had a problem. YMMV.

I almost passed out in a chinese resturant from an overload of MSG. Very unpleasant & scared the people I was with.

Due to many people having adverse reactions to it, some restraunts advertise no MSG used! I just try to stay away from chemical additives in food as much as possible.

Best thing I've heard of for it's use is as a paste to cover bee stings. Think it helps draw out the stinger.

MSG is an excitotoxin - focus on the toxin part of that name. It is very bad for you, can make your heart do funny things (the excito part). I believe you can find articles on excitotoxins a www.westonaprice.org
Much better for you to stay away from them.

I've read that it has been associated with interfering with insulin levels, not that you can't necessarily use it if you're diabetic, but that it can encourage insulin resistance. Supposedly, for example, this is why chinese food often makes you hungry after several hours: because it is heaped with MSG and your insulin levels rise and then drop dramatically after this time, making you feel hungry.

MSG is also reputed to be a good deterrent for those dogs that have the nasty habit of eating their own poop. You just sprinkle a bit on their daily meals.

MSG is for some people deadly. I am allergic to it, but no so bad that my life is in danger. For many people it causes dirreah, headache, itchy "crawling" skin and other nasties. Just another example of style over substance.

Accent is MSG. Grandma still has a couple cans on her spice rack. The lemon has added flavorings but still just MSG. That's probably why it isn't available anymore, at least I haven't been able to find it.

Accent food enhancer is available. I carry it on our shelves.

Sams club carries it in a almost half gallon can.

Dollar General around here has a VERY small can for 2 bucks.

MSG is poison. It tenderizes people's insides resulting in their outsides being saggy and flabby.

But to the vast majority of Folks, it is a flavor enhancer.
Most Folks suffer no ill effects, from prolonged use of MSG.
It doesn'r bother DSW Sharon, or myself.
We do have a couple Friends, who drop in, who are mildly allegic.
So we don't use it.

Some Folks are allergic to a lot of things, that most Folks aren't.
Take Peanuts, for instance.
Some Folks are "Deathly Allergic", to Peanuts, in any form or part.
But that does not mean that Peanuts are "Poison".
Have fun.
