You need to neutralize the pH from acidic to neutral. Soaking in baking soda and water or salted whole milk will correct the pH extreme. While the salted milk wont offer as fast a relief as the baking soda paste, it will moisturize your hands also.

I can't vouch for the baking soda since I've never tried that, but I have soaked in milk and that did ease the burning and stopped my skin from blistering.

Yeah, my goofy DH once chopped habaneros barehanded, and the only thing that gave him relief was milk. I had some dry milk on hand but no fluid, and that worked fine. Typical skim stuff too.

Milk, cream, yoghurt, thawed ice cream - anything liquid and dairy. Water will only make it worse. You do the same when you've eaten some that burns your mouth and makes your lips burn. Drink milk. Never drink water or alcoholic beverages with chillies. It intensifies the burning sensation.

You could try slicing some cucumbers and putting them in milk, and using both on your hands (or eating them if you have a mouth burn).

For heaven's sake, don't put your hands anywhere near your eyes! It's a mistake you'll only make once.

Also, next time - wear gloves.

My Momma always used milk then made a paste from the milk and baking soda

I had a mild burn on my thumb from cutting a jalapeno and got baking soda paste on that thumb (for other reasons) and it didn't help any. YMMV

I did that last year (habaneros). OH MY GOSH THE BURN!!! My hands turned really red.

Milk, and standing in front of the air conditioner non-stop helped some.

My hands burned for about three days. They'd feel better and then start up again whenever they got wet.

I wear thick playtex gloves now when dealing with hot peppers.

I made the mistake of not wearing gloves a couple of weeks ago. I washed with soap to cut the oil, then wrapped my hands around frozen rice bags. After a while, the pain stopped. But oh! It hurt for a bit there!

Hope you're better soon!

I used rubbing alchol to take the oils off of my hands after cutting up jalepenos. Works pretty well. I just wash my hands in it and let them air dry then go back and wash with soap and water.

Egg Whites, I just whip them up and rub the whites all over my hand and leave them on for a few, this also will stop a hot pepper burn in your mouth.

I keep a box of sensi touch disposable latex rubber gloves around. Cost about $2 or $3 for 50, lasts me about a year for jobs like handling fish to filet (which my hands go raw from the fish slime), and things like cutting hot pepppers. Learn how to take them off properly for disposal.

I once worked in a packaging plant and we occassionally ran peppers. The worst thing to do is run cold water on the hands. Your pores close up and the toxin stays put. Run warm water on your skin so that the pores stay open Use a mild soap and good lather. After that, try whatever homemade remedy you like, egg whites look good to me.

Wash with warm water and soap and baking soda. Then liberally butter your hands.
