a .410 shotgun with slugs just might get the bear more upset. But then a rifle chambered in .45-70 Govt. may be too large for ruby jane to handle/ shoot.
We have been having problems with rabid foxes where I live at. So I have several weapons to deal with the bears and mountain lions (.30-06 springfield), foxes (12 gauge Remiongton 870 shotgun), and raccoons (.22LR Browning Buckmark or a CZ-52 in 7.62X25mm Tokarev semi-auto pistols- CZ-52 is one of my CCW weapons). The critters are rather active these days and I see deer right next to the house. The others animals tend to stay further down the hill and I will let them be, until they become a nusiance. I have talked to the Lieutenant of the Game Wardens and the Sheriff's Office animal control officer in case I have to dispatch a bear or mountain lion. As long as they pose a threat, then I can send them to the happy hunting grounds without fear of legal action.
If I get any more firearms (this is your rifle, this is your gun....) This Marine is gonna run out of gun safe space to secure them!!!!
