Best gun for Elk hunting?

Can I get one that will work for Elk, Deer, and Bear?
For Turkey he will likely use a bow. But the gun I want to get him as a surprise gift and I just am not sure what to look for.
I go to the gun stores and here all kinds of info that contradicts its self.
What do you all use?
Elk will be the main target as I can stand the taste of Dear. But If things get tight we could get dear for the dogs. I feed them beef right now.

a 30-06 IS the all around gun. All you will need to do is buy the right ammo. Say 150gr. bullets for deer, 180gr. for elk and 200+gr. for bear. And they can be had cheap enough. They won't rock you back when you shoot them and they do a good job of putting game on the table. I've shot one for 20 years and wouldn't trade it for any of the new and improved calibers. JMHO

the 30-06 is a standard- for a good reason but if the bears and elk are the main items and your hubby is experienced then maybe a 300 winchester mag or somethin even a bit bigger may be in order depending on how he hunts etc . I would ask him or ask his buddies what he likes or desires.

.300 win mag will do anything you need you can get the same range of bullet plus some you can get for a .30/06 i have had one since 1992 and have never regretted the purchase.

I personally hunt with a 45/70. But, if long range shots are going to be taken it requires an experienced shooter.

Instead of buying him a gun as a surprise, it may be better to surprise him by telling him you'll buy him any gun he wants. That way HE gets to pick it out instead of trying to "act" happy about YOUR choice when he really had something else in mind.

I'd go with the .300Win mag. If you are into handloading you can take anything from groundhogs to elk.

No one gun is a best gun for anything. It has much more to do with how well it is used.
Back when I was hunting a lot I had 4 different guns I would use depending on where I was hunting more then anything else.
A 12g shot gun for close shots as well as shots that that be in heavy cover.
A 300 savage for shots that could be out to say 150 yards.
A 30/06 for about the same as the 300 savage but maybe a little longer as well.
A good old 22 for smaller game.
As someone else said a 30/06 is a great over all gun that will take anything in N.America as long as the person using it can put the shots where they are needed. The same can be said for the 300 savage.
Now that does not mean I would go after a large brown bear with one of them but others have a million times with great success.

For elk it would all depend on where I would be hunting them instead of anything else. They can be hunted from close cover to very long range shots. The same for deer and bear. I would say your talking about black bear when you say bear. If that is true then anything you can hunt deer or elk with is just fine for them as well.

But anyway anything in the 30 cal range will work just fine for him chances are. I have no clue where you live or maybe could give you a little better idea. For example if you live some place where he may have to take some long shots then the 300mag that as said would be a good idea. But if he hunts in a place where a long shot is 100 yards then that would be short of a waste.

My husband likes his .270 for big game but the 30-06 is a bit more reliable in bear country. For some reason, my dad thinks it's the other way around and he KNOWS guns... Hmmm, better ask him about that some time...

30-06 is an "all-around" rifle! A FINE choice for up close or far away, depending on the bullet used. A large variety of bullets are available for 30-06.

Having said that......my personal favorite would be 7mm Mauser, but I won't go into the reasons why ... as it would only confuse the issue.

Ruger bolt-action is a good choice for a 30-06 rifle.

And I would agree usually. He has asked I get him one. I think he wants me to handle it for this purchase because of the price aspect. He gets easily tempted. LOL
It will not be his only gun so I'm not to worried about the wow factor. We intend to get several in time. We would like to have one for each able bodied member of the family. So dad gets them first and then can pass them on. KWIM?
Anyway, I just want to replace the 30-06 he forgot at his dads house. His dad wont ship it home to us and it. Dh is pretty upset over haveing lost it. I thought about getting him something else but the 30-06 was a good gun. Not fancy, not expencive but overall good.
Thanks for all the input. Gives me a good idea when I'm out shopping.

If he had a 30-06 and liked it, I'd get him another one. A body really can't go wrong with one.

There are a lot of other calibers that will work too. 308, 7 mag, 300 mag, etc. etc.

Within reason, it's really the Indian and not the arrow.

I have used a 300 magnum for over 20 years as my primary gun. Tho I have may large caliber guns. It will take anything on the northamerican contenent. As I also reload. I can and do. Shoot anything from prarie dogs to Moose. While I don't eat the prarie dogs. I do shoot rabbits to keep my off hand reflexes keen. I does less damage than a 22 caliber. If reloaded right.

I vote .300 Win Mag, that will put a smile on anyone's face, provided they're on the correct end of the scope.

im used to mid sized white tail deer. the first time i ever saw an elk up close was at an exotic animal auction in the texas hill country. as it made its entrance into the auction ring it had to bend its head down to get its horns through. then it got taller and taller and taller. it was huge. and fast. nobody prodded it. it knew it was king of the room and dared anyone to do anything to it. whatever you use you, make it BIG.

DH has a bow and loves it. Got a nice beaver with it. LOL I dont think he wants to have to chase down a wounded Elk or run from a wounded Elk if he just so happened to "miss" aim. LOL
Hey, do you have pics or a link to that land you have posted in you siggy?
