Above ground swimming pool/deer.

My SIL was just here and he told us he is having problems with deer drinking out of his pool! IMO, it could be worse as they could be swimming in it!

Anyway, any ideas how to discourage this besides putting a cover on it? I told him to urinate all around it.

If it's as hot there as it is here, don't be surprised if more animals don't come looking for a drink.

I've never had problems with them in my pool, but it is fenced with a deck all around it. However, we have a small kiddie pool that we have out in the woods that we are filling daily for the animals in order to help keep them from coming on our property looking for water.

Ardie,

Can you define what the SIL's "problem" is with deer drinking out of the pool?

A couple of years ago a friend of mine had a big old pig sowl get out. He went over to the neighbors house to have a look around. The neighbors were off on vacation. Well he walked behind the house to see if his pig was around there and to his surprise it was laying in the bottom of the swimming pool, dead.

This was like a 400 - 500 pound pig, dead in the bottom of the pool. He knew a guy who had a logging/wrecker type truck and they got it out. He had to pay the homeowners next water bill as they drainned it all and filled it up with new water.

There is a cover on the pool in the first post.....the deer have figured out a way to remove part of it so they can drink.

I was thinking of suggesting peeing (as Ardie said) or human hair. Any other ideas?

Ohh, there IS a cover! SIL didn't say that. Mothballs maybe??

(For those who don't know, Zookeeper16 is my DD!)

In retrospect, beng that we're in drought conditions, I guess the derr are just trying to find a place to get water.

Put a fence around it? If deer have that easy of access to it, so would any kids that wander up to it....sounds like a liability risk to me if its unfenced.

Think about it for a minute.

If the deer are not afraid to come up to your house and drink from a swimming pool what good would it do to pee or throw hair around. The deer have already shown they are not afraid of human smell.
You may keep some people away with the piles of hair and the pee stains but the deer don't care.

You need a really high fence to keep deer out. I second the motion of putting out a pool for the deer to drink out of. They can get a horse trough at TSC.

I'd put a deer stand on the garage and fill the freezer.

I haven't noticed any drinking from our pool - severe drought here is making them very bold - but we add chlorine each evening, maybe the smell of that keeps them away.

I`d much rather swim in a pool with a little Deer spit, than one with pee or hair all around it....ewwww.
My only suggestion would be a taller fence or a hotwire.
