We found one of the stolen mailboxes!

Just as I suspected, it was in the swamp across the road. It's been very hot and dry so the swamp water level is receding. Today I noticed our mailbox out in it. By the end of the week hubby thinks he'll be able to reach it and fish it out. I just hope it isn't to beat up from them using a chunk of concrete to knock it off the post.

I'm sure the first mailbox they stole is out in the swamp too. It was smaller and hasn't become visible yet.

Who is stealing them? I've never understood the vandals fascination with the ordinary mailbox....Many in our neighborhood have been hit with bats or something, all dinged up. So far ours hasn't been hit, but I'm sure it will be eventually. When that happens, I'll switch to getting my mail at the P.O..

We believe it is the 11-14 year old boys (3 of them) at the end of the road. They're in school now and the vandalism seems to have stopped. Until school started they were spending a lot of time whizzing up and down the roads on three-wheelers while their parents are a work.

Can they fingerprint it? If not, I would still start telling the story the police were fingerprinting it, might scare some kids into thinking they are on to us ! Maybe they will leave it alone .

We had some morons smashing mailboxes a few years ago, they didn't notice the dead end sign at the beginning of the street. They also didn't know that we have TWO deputy sheriffs living on our road. We blocked the road and called the sheriff. Those were some might unhappy high school boys, but the roadside was litter free for a long time.

I don't know about where you live but I gave up my PO Box after they yet again raised the rental price. It had been $56 a year and was going up--no thanks.
Instead of having a clerk walk a few feet to place mail in my box they now pay a carrier to sequence the mail, pack it into trays, drive it to me and deliver it. Cost effective eh?

Wow that's a good point. Seems like they'd save more money if they reduced their PO BOX fees. Raven: I'm glad you found your mailbox, it'd be so nice if people would just leave your stuff alone!!!

We had the same thing going on where I used to live. We were in a curve and they never got us, but got the boxes on eighter side of use 5 or 6 times. The old man next to me filled a bent up mail box with cement and just waited. It got hit and the next day a 16 year old from the next road over was at the store with a broken wrist from hiting a box with a bat while driving by that would not give. Never happened again.

We refuse to give in to vandals.

Do like a friend of mine did.. Hook 'Um! (His used to get run over with cars or trucks..)

He built a mail box from well casing and it looked exactly like an El Cheepo unit BUT it couldn't be destroyed with a base ball bat..hehe

He made the mount with.. again.. smaller well casing and covered it with 1"x4"s to make it look like a 4"x4". At the base of the mount he added some heavy rebar hooks pointing up and buried these under the surface..

'Bout a week later, He hooked one! They drove over it and the hooks got tangled up in the steering linkage! All he had to do is call the sheriff..
