Well, great news everyone!
I want to thank everyone who has been so supportive of me on this forum here in the past few weeks. You know what? We sold 19 dozen eggs this week. This was our biggest week ever as far as eggs go! We are both very pleased, and we have an order for eggs for next Friday (a week from today), for 4 dozen. Seems like everyone at the library has discovered us and now they all want eggs. One lady called out white eggs, perfectly lovely! LOL
I'm so glad. I was truly thinking that my australorp girls were going to have to start going to freezer camp, but now I think we'll be fine with them. Can't help but pick up from here, right?
Anyway, Thanks again everyone. You are a great bunch of people!

Praise God! I'm so glad!
What a great start! He does provide for our needs, even though it is sometimes hard to see and to wait.
Rejoicing with you!!!

Don't forget to maintain that flock. When you get to the point you're selling 80% of the monthly production, order 20% more + replacements for any that should drop in production in the next 5-6 months. Plus factor in how your flock 'performs' during the winter. If their production slows, order some RTL pullets from McMurray or Welp NOW and go pick 'em up. People don't stop eating eggs in the winter...
Good job V...

Hey! I've already got 43 eggs in the bator to hatch hopefully more pullets! I'm eggcited! LOL
Yes, God does provide. Trouble is, he provides what we "need" not what we think we need or want!
Thanks everyone!

Do you have a breed that can be sexed asap? Why feed a rooster when money is tight.
And What made the difference?
Great for you!!!!

Well
You know my BIG white eggs come from white leghorns and then I have some partridge cochins that were some of my first chickens. I have this big old Partridge cochin rooster. I hatched some of those eggs (which are now some of my layers). I got white chickens with red speckled spots on them, spose you'd call them Splash Parthorns! LOL!!!!! I have about 40 of those.
My big white eggs have gotten attention through word of mouth. I am going to have order my own cartons soon, because I can't keep enough of them on hand with people just giving them to us, and I know it is more healthy to have new fresh cartons anyway. My white eggs are big enough that it is hard to hold onto 2 of them and you should see them when I get a double yolker!
Then I have about 100 black australorps.
And coming up are some more of the splash parthorns and my favorite little girls, my buff orpingtons. I have 10 of those. I asked for 1 rooster with them and they sent 4 Oh well, orpingtons make nice frying chickens.
So no, nothing really sex-linked, but I'm okay with that. I can eat the roosters that come up in the ranks. I just hold out about 4 eggs for 10 days and I have my next supply of layers coming up.
I do also (for my treat), have 3 marans hens, 1 black, 1 splash, and 1 cuckoo. I will be getting some blue birchen marans soon and those will be to breed to sell the eggs for people to hatch.
You know, its a small start but it is a start!
You know though, the greatest difference was that I came on here and asked people for advice and people answered and helped me. Bill in Oh gave me some great advice like the ads that he told me to put the paper. I have had some response to that. And Pony, who is praying for me (and I am sure there are others). I think those things plus the fact that I was open to the advice, were the things that made the difference. I can't say enough about this website and the people. Oh, I have had a few people who just think I'm crazy and a few that said nasty things about me when I tried to sell my german shepherds on here without having them OFA certified which I knew nothing about, but most of the people on this website are warm, friendly, caring people who want to see other succeed as well as themselves and they want to be neighborly, just like the title page of this whole website says.
To everyone, again, thanks neighbors!

dunroven, it's those small success stories that are really uplifting for those of us that have 'down' times - we can be inspired to 'hang in there', have faith, work hard and turn things around. Congratulations!....(and Thank you.)

You know, if you ever find yourself with too many eggs - those Muscovy love a hard-boiled egg! lol ...as do chickens! Circle of life and all that jazz...

Dunroven, I got an email the other day from eggcartons.com. They are having a sale on "misprinted" egg cartons. They are the pulp cartons, not the foam cartons. They also have a free shipping special if you buy those cartons.

well, ummm
I checked out the eggcartons.com site and they really are not such a special deal. If you buy their misprinted cartons you pay .22 per carton, i.e., 100 cartons for $21.99. Of course no shipping, but it would be 87.96 for the 400 that we would like to order.
If you buy 400 of the misprinted cartons, you get them for $59.00, and pay $32.00 for shipping, or $91.00 so you only save about $4.00. I can't believe it would cost $32.00 to ship those things. I'm going to call Monday and find out if they can ship by just regular postal service. They want to ship FedEx Ground. They probably have a contract with FedEx for it, but still, if USPS is cheaper, I would go that route. Otherwise, I'll probably just continue to use used for a while.
Thanks for letting me know about it though. I do appreciate being able to check it out.

Google "egg carton.com"
I get great prices there (shipping kills cause Alaska is extra"
I just use Avery lables 5160
I use 2 or 3 each box
one with the name of the farm
one with the phone and email address
I also use have some printed that say "please return" (farm customers get those)
some printed that say check out "Local Harvest and the farm name"
those go on tourist boxes
Some printed that say "gift from God" those go on boxes that I donate ---On those cartons no other lable goes on -- We do not put on any other lable on those eggs--No need for those who get them to know who did it. and at the same time we are the only one able to donate to the food bank by law so the fb know it is us and the Missionaries know that it is us so we are track able.
Also that way the people who pay for eggs can not feel like "we why should we pay since they give so many away"
I also am really working on lay dating the eggs (it is harder cause eggs are not flat) so some look messy and my trial ones that turn out bad go to the donation eggs.
I believe that in stamping the eggs with the lay date that my eggs will stand out even more.

I think
I think that www.eggcartons.com is the place you are talking about, right? That's where I went with the prices. They don't give much of a break, only $4 off on the shipping in getting misprinted cartons, or .01 per carton overall, so I didn't see much difference in it and right now, used clean cartons are better for us. We'll probably get some of the cartons another time, when money is better.
