Shortwave Radio under $175?

I was wondering if anyone could reccomend a shortwave radio that can be had for under $175.
thanks
Adam
EDIT: I'm looking for a reciever, just for casual listening, I would prefer one with a digital tuner. As for freq. beats the crud out of me I have an 80's RadioShack radio that offers "SW1/SW2 4-12MHz" so I'd like as a mimimum replace that but if more is offered then I'd like to pick that up. I like listening to the international and independent broadcasts...who knew China and Cuba were such great places, lol.

When you say shortwave radio what freqs do you want to cover? Are you a ham operator? do you want a transceiver or just receiver? Many questions left unanswered. Biggest question is what do you want to use it for? Depending on usage there is radios out there for less than 175. Sam

We got a digital SW radio from RadioShack for $150. They also have another one for $100 that is not digital.

I have a Grundig YB 400PE, it's digital and it works pretty good. They don't make it anymore but the replacement is the Grundig 4000A which you can find online for around 90 bucks. It's a pretty good little radio but the Sideband reception is pretty poor, maybe they fixed that in the 4000A. My personal preference has always been Grundig radios.

short wave

i have used a Grundig YB400PE for years. bought it new for way too much. now they can be had for $99 bucks. it is still the highest rated shortwave for listening purposes on the market. it is however fully digital.

i highly recommend getting the yearly shortwave directory so you can home in on the right frequency.

Grundig makes a newer model for a bit more and their sister company makes them a bit cheaper- all great quality. As well, sony and sangean and many other make great receivers. just google shortwave radios and buy one from a warehouse.

As an advanced class ham radio operator of 30+ years, I myself use as a portable shortwave receiver with digitial input tuning and memories covering 150 KHz to 30 MHz and AM/ FM- the RadioShack DX-390 (Sangean 818 clone?) with SSB cababilities. I have 3 of them and they can be found for under $80.00 dollars on Ebay for a used one. Go to Ebay and look under Consumer Electronics and the Shortwave Radios section. See if the receiver you like has a provision for attaching an external antenna (that whip antenna on the radio is ok)... That will greatly increase your receprtion with some wire up in the air compared to that small whip antenna..

I second the Sony 7600....I've had one for years. Works good, easy on batteries, and has a synchronous detector for AM.
