Making sunflower oil

We grew the oil type sunflower seed this year and I found this interesting article about making oil. Thought I'd share in case anyone else was interested:

I really like that journeytoforever.org site. It has a LOT of awesome information. Thanks for posting attention to the sunflower oil.

Did you grow a lot of the oil sunflower seed?

This was the first year we grew some. They did so well we plan to grow a large plot of them next year.

What did you do to keep critters and birds out ??

Mine were a real 'pest' magnet this year ..

I can't imagine what steps one would have to take to
protect several acres of sunflowers or whatever amount
one would need to grow to produce sufficient oil ..

Triff ..

Nothing. I have 10 dogs and 10 cats. That seems to sufficiently keep out critters and birds.

my general strategy for all plants is to plant one for God, one for the animals and one for myself.

Check out http://journeytoforever.org/biofuel_.../oilpress.html and http://www.haitiinnovation.org/en/20...-micro-lending just to name a few.

If you google "appropriate technology" you will find there are a lot of really neat things out there that have been designed for developing contries which would be very useful on the homestead. There is a multi CD set called the "appropriate technology library" which I might buy one of these days - but it is expensive as heck. Here is just a sample of some of the information that is contained in them.

Ohhh... thank you for that link Ravenlost!
I have been struggling to make/use a solar cooker for quite some time now. This Link has some new ideas for me to try! I haven't had time to go through the whole site yet though.

Can someone please tell me the difference in 'black oil sunflowers' and the rest? I grow sunflowers for animal feed and never thought about the difference. Also where can I get some seed.

Donsgal, Thank you very much for the link to 'thefarm' website.
I've only spent a few minutes checking it out, but it's up there with 'journeytoforever' for the practical information it contains.
