Last year I paid $240 per ton for bagged "nut" coal. If you order in bulk it usually cheaper, but I don't have a coal bin so I purchased bagged coal. Price depends on where the coal comes from, the coal I bought was from PA so I paid more then someone living in PA.

I was just thinking of having a truck load dumped way out back to have around here for the old stove I have. Would just be used one day for cooking and heating if needed.

There are different grades of coal (as with most other commodities). Simply put...
ANTHRACITE Coal from Pennsylvania is much different than the BITUMINOUS Coal found here in New Mexico. There are sub-grades which relate to contents such as sulfur. The price will vary significantly depending on the "grade" and "location". It also varies within "regions" of the country, EVEN LOCALLY.

You will want to cover the coal that you store. It will absorb moisture.

We live in north central PA and have and do sometimes burn coal in 2 our wood burning stoves that we have with the grates. I believe I did pay around $260 a ton several years back and just had it dumped in back of the house out of the way of things. Covered it with a tarp. Actually it doesn't hurt the coal to get it a little wet..stops the dust... but as mentioned do cover it. I usually just buy now several 40# bags of chesnut coal to keep on hand. When it gets really cold we will start up the 3rd stove in the house an old Kalamazoo livingroom stove and put the coal into that..Boy..once it start a-glowing it will heat up out of the house !! I know there is a lot of discussion about pollution with coal but I hope the little bit I do burn doesn't do much harm. We have 3 wood burning stoves in our old farm house..no other central heat..and usually have 2 burning during the winter all during those months..2 will take the coal. Good Luck !!

Wyoming produces over half of the coal mined in this country. Because of shipping costs it realy depends on how far from the mine you are and the area of the country you live in. Last fall, a friend of mine got stoker coal from the mine for $45 a ton (10 ton min). But in Montana I have a coal mine within 5 miles of the homestead. Last I checked they wanted $60 a ton plus delivery.

Here at the power plant we pay by the quality of the coal at it ranges between 15 to $30 a ton delivered by the train load.

This past winter I paid about $185 a ton in York County PA. I saw that some places were higher around $198 a ton. I know that less then 5 years ago I was able to buy it for $136 a ton.
Note: these prices are if I haul it, it is more with the delivery charge which is about $50...

YMMV

Hope that helps answer your questions
