Why is my chainsaw smoking so much?

I have a husky 141 chainsaw, I replaced the drive sproket with a new bearing and put grease in the bearing. Just used grease from a grease gun that you would grease a tractor with. After 5 mins of use things started smoking in there. There is a bit of oil getting to the chain, but not as much as I would think there should be. Also, the chain is sharp. What could be the problem? Chris

you should be using Bar oil

at a rate of almost one tank of bar oil to one tank of 2 cycle mixed gas.
The Sprocket nose is often talked about whether to grease it or not. Some say the bar oil will lube it just fine, some say grease will cause dust and dirt to get in there.
How is your chain tension? You should tighten the chain with the nose of the bar held up and just tighten the chain til the sag is gone and it will turn freely with a gloved hand.

Erics right about the chain tension. If the chain is too tight , and there isn't enough oil , the clutch will start to smoke. One thing that is commonly overlooked is cleaning out the bar groove and oil passages on the bar. Even if the oiler is working 100% , if the oil holes in the bar are plugged, the chain won't get any oil. I am also assuming you have the right bar on the saw. Be sure the oil grooves on the bar line up with the oil slot on the saw. This can be easily seen with the side cover on the bar side removed.

Thanks, I'll look into those things tonight, maybe I do have the chain too tight and I'll clean out the bar. Chris

Yes the chain does sound dry, it's getting some oil when I pull the throttle and the chain goes around, I can see it spray against something, maybe it's just not getting enough oil. Thanks Chris

I read the title of this thread and thought, "peer pressure?" - please excuse me - I'm feeling a little punchy and had to share.

It's okay, I understand. My first thought was, " a nicotine habit is hard to break". My DW says my mind is a little warped. I "see" and "hear" things differently than most folks do.

Warped minds must think alike.......or at least more alike than the general population. Mine went to: "I wonder what the nicotine content of a black oak is -vs- that of poplar?" Must be why it's so hard to "cut" the habit???
