We had some wicked storms too, mink. One strike was close enough to turn on DH's stereo receiver... never had that happen before.

From what I have read lightening does not need to actually hit the wire (although it likely did in your case). Close counts. I have four trip devices on mine and occasionally it gets by all of them.

That is why they warn you not to put them in buildings. I have had several blown u[p, we get a lot of lightning. Even a direct strike to ground close by can do it by backing up the ground rod through induction. There are as you know devices that can help, but they are not foolproof.

Yuppers I mine my blow apart also years ago from a lightening strike~! Blew the cover clear across the barn floor~!
So far now I have not have a close enough strike.
Years ago I had lightening strike the cable TV incoming cable Smoked my VCR and the Stereo the VCR was plugged into~! And I was WATCHING the weather report on TV at time~!
Did not do anything to the TV as the Cable First goes into the VCR then goes to the TV and they were plugged into the same outlet too. That is why I said it stuck the Cable incoming line~! I Think.~!
Oh well insurance covered it all and with good coverage like I have I was able to get a real nice VCR better then the one that got zapped
Same thing 4 years ago had my TV zapped by a strike, put in a claim added about a 100 bucks and instead of getting a replacement 27 inch TV Monitor I bought a 32 in TV Monitor. Real cool.
too bad it didn't happen around now as I would then get a Wide Screen Hi Def one~! But 4 years ago High Definition TV's were REAL costly Now they are getting more in line in price.

Had lightning strike a tree near my fence some years ago. It flashed to the fence and vaporized a few hundred feet of wire. It also fried a number of electronics in the house, which was only forty or fifty feet from the strike -- as I was frantically trying to unplug things. Blew up a clock radio, damaged the display on the microwave, and toasted a cell phone that was plugged in to charge, among other things.

The sound about deafened me.

I've also been knocked to my knees by a nearby strike while hiking. Scared the snot out of me.
