Dog-trot house style

I was showing a co-worker the definition of a "dog-trot" type of house and came across this site....

http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildi...rot_House.html

It has some wonderful photos, but I was also thinking it would be of inspiration to some that have a small cabin and what was in the rooms and how the porches and rooms were set up.

Besides that, the photos are just darn pretty.

Hope someone enjoys it.

Angie

I liked it plus if I was to build one, I would make sure it had wraparound porches..all around including the sides and the back. Would make it much more useful to me.

I could live in a house like that and be absolutely content.

Angie - Thanks for the site, what fun it will be to browse there.

I love the dogtrot style. There used to be several of these houses in our area, but I can think of only 2 surviving examples. That's too sad.
One is a living museum and the other belongs to a distant cousin and is lived in.
My cousin's house has porches across the front and back. The back porch is screened as well as the front across the dogtrot. They have also put double glass doors with long windows on each side across the dogtrot. In summer they keep then open for breeze, but it helps tremendously in winter to stop that breeze. Oh, they have long transoms across dogtrots too. They still have the original barn and log smokehouse too. A totally cool place.

dog-trot

There is one in North Louisiana where my family lives(actually it is just across the border in Arkansas). I went to it to an arts and crafts event that was held there and fell in love with it. It has wrap around porches. I could definitely live in it and be content.
Edited for spelling.

I lived in one for a short time. I didn't enjoy it at all. One side was for the bedrooms and the other side had the kitchen and one bedroon and a small living room. The side with only the bedrooms did not have any heating at all. The other side was heated. There wasn't any inside plumbing.
After we moved out it was left to rot down. Nobody wanted to live in it.

Now I would enjoy living in one but would still like to update it first.
