I need help with Vinyl floor discoloring

We have a vinyl floor in our kitchen that has a small rug in it in front of the oven and another in front of the french door. The one in front of the oven has a green border around it and the vinyl has discolored or turned dark around the border. If you lift the rug the floor is pristine under it. It is just where the border is . The one in front of the french doors is turning the vinyl darker under the entire rug. It has a latex backing on it. Has anyone ever had this happen and do you have any suggestions as to how to correct it?
Thanks,

Is there any chance water got under it? I know that will discolor it.

If the discoloring doesn't come up with some good old fashioned elbow brease, you are pretty much stuck with it unless you are ready to replace the vinyl. If the vinyl is in good shape otherwise, I'd simply cover it up using the same or other - slightly larger area rugs.

Thanks for the replys. No there has not been any water under it and we do very little cooking with grease so I don't think that is the problem. The vinyl is about 8 years old. Installed in the house new and I believe it is A name brand vinyl ( Armstrong I think ) not that that means anything. I have tried scrubbing it and it will not come off with elbow grease so maybe we are just stuck with it until we feel necessary to replace it. It is in great shape otherwise.

Are there many windows in the room. It could be just from the UV coming in from sunshine. The rug prevents the UV from getting to the vinyl.

I would try pouring a little vinegar on it and sprinkle baking soda in the vinegar, let set a few min, scrub it and see how it looks.
I was shocked the first time I tried this on a nasty floor of a house I was moving into.
hope this helps, its sure alot cheeper than a new floor Christine

I've had good luck using Brite to get out stains. Put down a puddle of it and let it sit for a few minutes. Then scrub it with a brush or a plastic scrubbie.

With a lot of ventilation....use amonia. Pour it on, let it sit, scrub it up.

Rubber backed rugs will discolor linoleum. Do a search about linoleum and it will show that it is very common.
