Last year something had been getting in the chicken house , so I set a home made live trap to catach the critter. The trap was made from a 30 gal. metel barrel. The next morning the trap door was shut , so I was peeking in trying to find out what I had got. A big ol striped skunk! I carefully carred the trap to the truck ,the plan was to release the offender a safe distance from home.My 9 year old daughter had been asking me to take her to wal-mart, so away we go. Our wal-mart has a big wooded area behind it so we planed to release the skunk there. But when I lifted the door from the trap , and jumped back into the cab of the truck, the ol skunk just walked out of the trap and made himself at home in the back of my truck. He would not get out of my truck! He just walked around sniffing and standing on his back legs looking out at everthing. After some time we finely drove around to the enterance to wal-mart and went inside to do our shoping. When we got back to the truck there was our new friend standing of his hine leggs looking at all the people passlng by. You should have seen the looks of peoples faces : ) Well As we left wal-mart the skunk was standing up looking over the side of the truck with the wind blowing through his hair and a big smile on his face....I did stop on the way home and get a stick and make him get out of the truck. My daughter still laughts about the time we took a skunk to wal-mart.

That reminded me to speak with Goldie the doggy about how not all black-and-white kitties are our friends.

Not a very entertaining story, sorry, but DH and I were out riding our bikes early one morning when a big fat skunk waddled out of the cornfield by the road right in front of me. I braked to a very abrupt stop and DH practically crashed into me, but he understood why once he stopped. I'd have rather done a header into the corn than hit the skunk. Who stared at us for a few seconds, then turned around and waddled back into the corn from whence he came.
And I think there may be a skunk living underneath the goat barn, but I can't prove anything.

Believe it or not there are some people who actually keep them as pets. Says they're like cats and can be litter box trained. Wonder if there's any truth to it. In some parts of West Texas, we have spotted skunks of two different varieties..

My Rottweiler and I were vacationing in the Eastern Sierras. We pulled off in a little campground in Owens Valley late at night to sleep in the back of the truck. The dog was leashed to the bumper, with her bowl and water, and I was head to the bumper asleep.
A crunching noise woke me up.......
and there, with the moon setting over the Sierras, was a skunk in the dog's food bowl eating. The moon was shining through the skunk's tail hairs right under my nose.
"Oh- S''''''T!", I said. But the Rottweiler's eyebrows didn't even move.
Luckily, the skunk beat it, and when it did, my Rottweiler jumped into the truck with me.

When I was young, we bought my Mom a skunk for her birthday.it was descented. Our local vet gave her her shots-rabies, etc.We had a strom one evening and the telephone wnet out.the telephone man came to check our phone. My Dad hooked the screen door behing the guy and said ,'The animal is loose".The guy looked around expecting a cat or dog to pop out.Well, he WAS a bit surprised when Peppi jumped out from under a table with her tail 'bushed' out and stomping her front feet! He nearly went through the screen. He backed up and stuttered ,"Is it de-sk-u-n-k-ed????????"Peppi was a great pet.

There was a lame skunk living near our house a few months ago. We would see him limping along every so often. We looked out the window once to see our Jersey cow chasing him. It was very funny to watch her with her head down head down shaking it at him. Evidently he couldn't back up to spray due to his lameness. DH went out and stopped her so he could get away. i guess he got better and moved on since we have not seen him again nor smelled dead skunk anywhere.
Several years ago my parents were out of town for a few weeks and a family of skunks moved into their laundry room. It took quite awhile to get the stink out of there. My mother says she can still smell it when it is humid. Those skunks had gotten so comfortable that they would play on the lawn in full view of Mom and Dad for weeks after they returned.

Not any funny stories to report but Saturday as we were loading up the pickup to go back home from our land, we noticed the dog rolling in a mud puddle. So I got an old towel to clean her off & whoops! Smelled a skunk! Must have one under our shed & 'Honey' ticked it off. Wonderful smell in the truck all the way home.
The tomato juice bath is a fallicy, by the way!

Years ago I had a friend who loved to "twist" songs around with new lyrics - one of my favorites was about a man from out of the city who bent down to pick up a striped kitty "He's Moving On"! ROFLMAO!

A few years back I was at a customers house to pick up some out dated prime star boxes. She asked me to take down the dish for her. I agreed and she showed me around to the back of the house. It was very dark but I was very familiar with the dish and started to remove it. I was kneeling down when a cat started brushing up against me. I reached down and started petting it. I commented to the woman that she had a very friendly cat. She said that she did not have a cat.At this point one of her kids brought out a flash light. She pointed it at my feet where the cat was. Well obviously it wasn't a cat or I would not be replying here. At this point the skunk started to freak. Apparently I was ok in the dark, but not with the light on.The skunk started its attack run while we ran for the front porch. It sprayed the pole the dish was on and left the yard. Jim

About 7-8 years ago we were staying in a very upscale and charming vacation cottage community in Laguna Beach. We had sweet-talked the owner into letting us bring Archie, our Border Terrier with us on the premise that he was so well behaved and clean.
One late evening we were watching TV with the door open to catch the night breeze when Archie went streaking outside barking up a storm. Seconds later he came barreling into the cottage in a panic. It took a few seconds for the smell to hit. He'd taken a full shot right in the face from a skunk. After we locked him on the enclosed outsized patio, and phoned a vet to find out what we needed to deodorize him, my husband found an all night grocery store and headed out. Not knowing which of the 3 remedies the vet gave us worked best, he got ingredients for all of them and a 6 pack of beer to fortify us for the ordeal ahead.
We used the Dishwashing liquid/peroxide method, followed by the vinegar douche method, followed by the tomator juice method. I asked why he had gotten a POUND sized jar of Vaseline (it was just to protect the dog's eyes. after all) but he just shrugged. Anyway, something worked and Archie was soon free of eau de skunk. We went to bed wearily.
The next morning I heard noises on the patio and went out to investigate. It was a meter reader and he looked at me strangely. After he left and I went back outside, I realized why. All over the patio were empty Masengill douche bottles, beer cans, and this HUMONGOUS jar of Vaseline. Pretty weird stuff even by california standards. I can only imagine what that meter reader thought went on that night.

.....................Several years prior , on a Saturday , I had let my Akita into the kitchen too cool off as it was almost a 100 degrees(August) by noon . I was washing my truck in the shade of my covered parking and a skunk was approaching from a hundred feet away walking like it had a hangover . It never hesitated and when it got with in "squirting" distance I hit it with a stream of water from 40 feet away . It was trying to keep coming but I was spraying it with so much water it finally turned a round and moved away from my metal building . It never went into the "squirt" mode , even when I was "cooling" it's "squirter" with copious amounts of water . I finally came too the conclusion that it must have had Rabies and it's normal Inhibitions were not present . I had no shells for my 12ga. so I just let it walk away . , fordy...

I was late to work once because a skunk was under my car and threatened to spray whenever I approached.

I was camping once in a tent and woke up to the strong smell of peppermint. A skunk was in there w/ me, and he had gotten a pack of gum out of my purse and was chewing it. It is amazing how fast you can go from sound sleep to sitting in your car...

Don't know if this is funny or not...let's call it amusing.
I have an Akita/Norwegian Elkhound/Mystery Breed dog (Chance) that I've had since I was in high school who's finally moved into his retirement home (aka, my back porch - my parents had him prior to that). The night after he moved in with us, DH and I went out with some friends. When we got home we pulled into our garage, and immediately, without even opening the car doors, we smelled skunk. I was thinking, oh great, a skunk got into the garage somehow and got spooked and sprayed in here. So, I very cautiously got out of the car, making sure to keep an eye on everything around me in case he was still in there. The smell was absolutely nauseating. We went into the house and the smell was even worse.
That's when I realized, Chance had killed a skunk in the backyard. DH went outside with the shovel and got it and tossed it over the bank on the opposite side of the road 100'+ from our house or any other house (we're in town). Chance was very proud of what he had protected us from .
A couple days later we were talking with our neighbor and she was mentioning how bad their garage had smelled and they assumed a skunk had gotten in. She thought it was pretty funny when I told her that Chance had killed the skunk, and that was what the smell was from.
A few weeks later he killed another one, but this time he was smart enough not to break the stink-sack! That was greatly appreciated by the neighbors. Since then he almost got another, we saw the trail of blood and could smell it, but never did find it.
So far the dog has killed a mink, several raccoons, a river rat (which we found on our back porch), quite a few skunk... and probably others that we don't know about He doesn't bother any larger animals (like deer, thankfully), and seems okay with other dogs now, but definitely not cats.
