Invisible Pet Fence - over large areas????

Can the invisible pet fence be run thru a current metal fence - above ground or will it ground out and affect it's operation.

Yes it can, but it's life will not be as long as if it is buried since it will be constantly exposed to the sun and elements. Also it will probably be more susceptible to lightning. It does not transmit an electric current (it's a radio signal) so it won't "ground out" on a metal fence.

I'd think you'd have better luck running it under the metal fence. It only needs to be buried a few inches deep. We love our invisible fence. Just remember, that it's not an instant fix. You'll have to spend some time training the dog(s) so that they understand it. If you use a commercial company, they'll give you a training plan for it.

I had an invisible fence for a queensland heeler/ austrailian shepard mix.
He'd run through it going after a rabbit, the shock never bothering him. He'd sit & whine on the "outside" when he wanted to come home as he didn't want to get shocked again.

Silly dog.

That problem is solved by the "super zapper" collars. Some dogs require two collars initially. I've got two German Shepherds running on our fence. I go on holidays and leave the dogs running free. I love the system.

Radio Invisable fence

I had an invisable fence that worked by radio verses the buried wire. You place the unit in the middle of the perimiter and adjust the signal to where you want the limit at. I think I paid around $200 for it. I have long since sold it on eBay. It worked well.

Those work well for small areas-I think the diameter of the "fenced" area is only about 90 feet.

How large of an area could you use that on?

For the large perimeter did you bury the wire? How much wire can you bury and still have it be effective?

We have one we got at Tractor Supply. You can run up to 25 acres with exta wire.

Super zapper didn't work, even shaved his neck.
He's a very single minded dog.

Don't get me wrong, I think they're great. My other dog respected it and a guy down the road has one for his 2 lab mixes. They never chase my truck anymore!

I have one around the perimeter of my 14 acres, and my two incorrigible Pyrenees/Aussie mixes DO NOT go near the fence at all! The radio wire is woven through the livestock fence I have up for the horses. The dogs used to wiggle through the larger gaps in the livestock fence, and even bit the radio wire in two where it impeded their escape before we finished installing the whole thing (I told you they were incorrigible). Now, they stay just outside of the shock range, on the inside of the fence, and are so respectful of it that they keep that distance even if the fence is off. Warning beeps had no meaning to them - practically knocking them off their feet with the collars set on high did, though.

I got mine at Tractor Supply - I think it's Sport Dog brand, or something similar. Check the documentation with the different brands, though....the first one we bought specifically said to keep it away from other metal fencing - this one encouraged using it with existing metal fencing. So we did, and I swear by it! So do my extremely patient neighbors....

Pam <----------------- has no problems with escapees now

Melt two more holes in the same nylon collar with a hot nail and add a second super zapper, both set to the highest level. Make sure the collar is tight for the initial run. Trust me, it WILL work.

Thanks Pete. I believe that would have worked.

Too late though. I've just field fenced my 5 acres. Thank heavens they don't d-i-g.
Now I'm trying to figure out how to contain them when someone wants to drive through my gate. Maybe just some leashes until the gate closes. I keep it locked.

If it ain't one thing it's another...
