I was just having this discussion with a friend. We don't want to install electricity, as there are monthly bills and we need a whole new setup, but solar seems pretty pricey. We are using a battery charged fencing system, but need water pumped and kept from freezing in the winter in Maine. Let me know of your progress in this endeavor.

I am going to put in a grid connected solar electric system for our well. This is the company I have been looking at so far.

Our well's 900 feet deep and our static water level is around 450 feet. I've been looking at solar/wind systems and still haven't found one that I like.

I wouldn't have a problem if I only needed to lift the water 150 feet - there're lot of systems that would fit that bill.

I'd like to hear from anyone who's using an alternative energy system to pump water from 500' or greater.

thanks,

-bob

solar is pricey at first then its free the rest of your life. The electric pumps cost you every day you use them and chances are the electric company will raise rates at some time. Ive never had an electric company lower my bill before LOL

Me too -- I would like to know who has Solar system that can pump water from deep well. Our well is 850 feet deep.....not sure about how I would know water level. We were without electricity last week for 3 days. Since this happens several times a year here, we had plenty of water but if we had Solar Well Pump that would be nice. I will read above too. Thanks

Open up the well and drop a weighted line in until it hits bottom. then read where the waterline is--

or-- if you can see down far enough into a well, tie a fishing float on a string, and when it hits the water, measure to the top of the wellhead.

Measuring the diameter of the well, taking the level down a known volume, and finding the time it takes to refill to the original level will give you the GPM(gallons per minute) recharge rate, as well. Importqant to know if your well ever runs dry when it shouldn't! (sorry, Mom, I didnt know the well was so small)

Mom? Which Mom? I have printed your instructions (from Terry W) and will try to get that lid off and the pump out this weekend. I may have to call neighbor for help. But THANKS and I think we can follow your instruc's to see the water level........and that helps to also know the recovery rate. When they dug the well, they told us it was 2 gallon per min.......but some globby-bloop talk about how deep the well was and that we would "never" run out of water....but that makes no sense. Of course we could run out of water. Thank you

most of what i have seen is direct pv it pumps slowly while the sun is out to fill a resivour so you store water not electrons water is less expensive to store than electrons if your tanks is big enought and you have it spill over to water garden, live stock so on.

Actually, solar is far from free for the rest of your life. The solar stuff I looked at has to be replaced every 15-20 years. We looked at doing a house this way, and they told us up front that best we could hope for was 20 years, and then you have to basically replace the whole thing, right? Batteries go bad after awhile too. Free is not always free.
