Hand-operated water pump

I've been contemplating buying and installing a hand-operated water pump in our yard. I like the idea of accessing water for ourselves and the stock in case of prolonged power-outages. Granted, it only happens every once in a while, but when it does, it sucks. I ran across this company that sells a stainless steel, frost-safe pump that supposedly can be installed on top of your existing well, in tandem with your regular, electric pump. Of course this can be pretty pricey and I'm pretty tight.
Has anybody tried anything like this and if so, how did it work out?

I think the pump you are refering to is a bison pump made in Houlton, ME. I visited their showroom and have seen the pump. It is quality. I have not personally used the pump but I am installing one this summer. I'll let you know how it turns out.

There are 3 or so diff types of well. Be sure you get the right type of pump for the type of well you have.....

I saw one that could hand pump water from even our deep well. Plan on getting one someday....just in case.
