Hormel Pigs Feet ...

Anyone ever eat them? DO THEY NEED TO BE COOKED?

We are having a "Fear Factor" party for my son. This is on the menu. Common sense says ... it's pickled so it shouldn't need cooked. But these are kids we're talking about and it's PORK we're talking about.

So, should I cook it or is it SAFE for kids to eat out of the jar?

No cooking necessary. Throw some pickled turkey gizzards in just for fun.

Don't forget the pork brains in milk gravy. Found in the canned meats section of fine grocers throughout the south.

I'm really suprised, many of the 7-8 year olds ate pigs feet, "fish eggs" (caviar), sardines and raw octapus (with sucker type things still on the tentacles). Only one came really close to puking, LOL.

Hi Mike;
I don't know if they are safe to eat or not. I think they are plain gross! It would take some sort of nuclear war for me to eat them, a survival situation. Pork out of a jar? I'd be wary.

My wife ate them when she was growing up (scrambled in eggs) ...me I'll eat hocks, pigs feet, livermush, but I can't get past the word "brains" on the can. eewwwwwwyuk

I never could get myself to eat pig feet or brains. My Ma always just thought she was in heaven when she set down to a plate full of scrambled eggs and brains, or you would hear her just smacking away while eating those slimy looking pig feet.

One of these days, I'm gonna suck my gut in and give them a try. I might be missing something just wonderful. But not today!

Mike in PA, How did you play the fear factor game? I think that is a good ideal to do at a kids birthday party. It would make for a interesting time. I use to take my nephews camping every summer right before school started back up again and every year I would bring some gross new thing for them to try. Always told them "Whoever doesn't try this has to run around the whole camp ground naked". Of coarse they would rather give the gross food a try then to run around naked.

But we would have sardines, anchoveys, oysters, etc. etc. They are now grown up and whenever we have a get together they will mention our fun campouts and the gross food they would have to try.

Meat has been safely canned in jars for years - just another method of food preservation It's all good!

My mom used to have a Survivor party for the neices, and later the nephews were invited too (but not for the overnight campout).

One of the games was a food challenge, like you have described.

One year, she called all of the respective mothers, and asked what their kid hated...that is what they were given on the food dare challenge.

Another year, she blindfolded them, and told them all the gross stuff they would have to eat. It was funny to watch the kids tremble with fear...and then she would give them a piece of candy bar!!!!

I looked up the cholesterol levels for Armour pig's brains. One single sized serving contains 1100% of the USDA recommended daily allowance. That's right... nearly 2 weeks worth of cholesteral in one serving of pig's brains. Jeez, no wonder my great-greats died in their mid 50's.

I bounce back and forth between IL and AK and was always suprized at how well accepted any thing "gross" was buy the school kids in IL till about high school.
Octopus in any form was always in demand!

The world's definetly changed, there was no fear factor foods it was just called what's for supper.
