Burger King,, A chance for homesteaders ??

Don't have a general animal forum
Looks like homesteaders with a decent size operation could maybe supply their local burger king

Burger King will buy cage-free eggs, pork from uncrated pigs

THE NEW YORK TIMES

In what animal-welfare advocates are describing as a "historic advance," Burger King, the world's second-largest hamburger chain, said Tuesday that it would begin buying eggs and pork from suppliers that did not confine their animals in cages and crates.

The company said that it would also favor suppliers of chickens that use gas, or "controlled-atmospheric stunning," rather than electric shocks, to knock birds unconscious before slaughter. It is considered a more humane method, though only a few slaughterhouses use it.

The goal for the next few months, Burger King said, is for 2 percent of its eggs to be "cage-free," and for 10 percent of its pork to come from pig farms that allow sows to move around inside pens, rather than being confined to crates.

From my experience selling restaraunt equipment, supplying local Burger Kings is not easy. They are usually only allowed to buy stuff "out of the book" which lists everything and which supplier sells it for the king.
They can buy from a small local supplier but it would be rare.

I agree with sammyd. This is true of almost ALL "chain-store" operations, including Supermarkets. Local vendors do serve chain supermarkets, however, getting "approval" can be a "big hassle". (been there-done that)

You get to know who has a "good operation" when you work with them as a vendor. Personally, I won't buy from Safeway unless I have no option. Albertson's is TOP QUALITY!

just my 2 centavos worth,
Bruce

No chance. These will still be coming from large suppliers that can give them a consistent product. Note Maple Leaf foods recently announcing they're going to loose housing for all their sows.
