rabbit fencing

We've just taken over some land and want to start growing. I know there are plenty or rabbits about and want to fence a couple of areas. I think the wire netting should be buried underneath the ground but can't remember how deep it should go. Also how high should we make the fence?

Thanks

Kaitlin

We have lots of rabbits around here. We just fence with 2x4 welded wire and haven't had any noticeable problems with rabbits in the garden. We don't bury the fence or anything. They do have lots of grassy yard and pasture areas to nibble, though. It might be tougher keeping them out if they didn't have other attractive options.

I used 2x4 welded wire also the last couple of years and haven't had a problem with rabbits. Squirrels were a different story.

I have electrified poultry fence for the chickens and I noticed rabbit tracks on the inside when snow was on the ground. They go in there and eat the feed. It's supposed to be used for rabbits also.
I watched one jump through the fence higher through the bigger openings and wouldn't get grounded.
Tricky little devels.

Here's a resource that should help. Has a section on fencing with guidelines (type of fence, height, burying depth) for cottontail rabbits and jackrabbits - includes photos.

Thanks for the link, Baronsmom. So, it should be 3 ft high and buried 4" below the ground. That'll teach'em!

Fencing is so much better than messing with repellents and such...

Make sure you bend the wire out into an "L" shape before burying it. The bottom of the "L" should face outside the fence. That way when animals dig, they dig into the wire...

same technique should be used to keep out other digging animals...
