I went to the link and tried to connect to the "Special Kitty" site. For some reason, I'm not getting there. (It says I have to download "Excel"?)
Can anyone give me a brief rundown? Such as if it is ALL "Special Kitty" canned cat food or just certain types?
I feed my cats (all eleven of them) one large can in the morning. Yes, they all have to share. They also have a high quality dry food available at all times, so the canned food is more of a treat than a major part of their diet.
What should I be looking for? So far, everyone seems fine (I type this as my twenty-pounder is rolling around on the floor at my feet).
Thanks. (I'm actually on my way to Wal-Mart to see what I can find out there.)

I have a dumb question.... is this manufacturer, Menu, the actual manufacturer of all these pet foods? What I am asking is do they manufacture a product, for example the 'slices in gravy' cat food and then it is labeled as different brands such as Special Kitty, Eukanuba, Good Value, etc? I am trying to understand if it is just one actual product that has different labels on it. Anyone know?

From what I've read it is one ingredient used in all those products.

That means that the 4 for a dollar Special Kitty I used to buy is the same as the $1.29 a can Iams I buy now, cause my vet said that my older cat needed "High Quality" food?

How awful. I can't believe all of those brands are manufactured in the same plant!

The ingredient in question is wheat gluten according to a press release. It doesn't mean that all the cat foods are the same with only labels changed. Beltane there are two plants involved, both in the U.S.

In my opinion, if you ain't feeding Diamond, you ain't feeding right. And I see Diamond is not on the list. He-he.

Sorry Tango.......didn't mean to be ouchy. It just took me five minutes to get to the actual list and I was in a hurry and decided to just post the link back here to save others the time. In truth, until I saw your post I didn't even know there was a pet forum. I am turning into a cranky old woman I think. To many irons and not enough fire. :baby04:

I saw Food Lion today pulled a lot more than what was on that list. Probably being safer than 'sorrier'.

I just got back from Wal Mart and they still have "Special Kitty," both canned and in the pouches, on the shelves. There are no posted notices to be found. To be on the safe side, I bought Friskies canned cat food since it is not on the danger list.
When I went through the checkout, I asked the cashier if she knew anything and she said, basically, "not much." She said there was a notice posted in the customer service area. I went to look and saw lots of other recall info on lots of other products but nothing on the pet food. There were too many people and lines for me to ask someone in that department.
So, I know no more than I did earlier in the day.

Actually, I really like Diamond brand, even with the problems they had. I feed the Diamond Lamb and Rice to my dogs. No corn or wheat products in it and I have no problems with allergies. I have one dog that breaks out in hot spots if he gets anything with corn. Look at the so-called "supermarket" brands and every one of them (at least the ones I've checked) have corn listed either as the first (and most plentiful) ingredient or the second or third.
I feed my cats Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, which is made by Diamond. My cats have done wonderfully on it. Beautiful coats, healthy, etc. Sometimes I have to substitute another brand because the feed store I frequent is small and he can't order a lot of anything and it's common for him to be out when I go to buy it (he'd never heard of it until, after I moved up here and I asked him to carry it). One of my cats tends to get "pukey" with anything other than Chicken Soup.
I guess recalls can happen with just about anything......even spinach!
So, make our own and how long until that chicken we buy has a problem?

There was a lot of confusion about this yesterday. Many people are not aware that it is only the wet foods in cans or pouches, not the dry foods. And the recall only affects "cuts and gravy" style food. Knowing that each brand has a different spin on the name, I'm not sure whether it is cuts style food and gravy style food, or cuts style foods with gravy. I'd avoid all of them if there is any question. Wheat gluten is used by vegetarians to create a mock meat called seitan. It can be flavored in any way to resemble any meat. Didn't know that it was used in pet foods but its role there would be a meat substitute probably. I don't know this for sure. Cats should be getting meat, not wheat gluten. Bad, bad for urinary tract health in neutered males (my opinion).
This was also posted on the Pet Forum.
(Diane, I totally understand. It takes up to two hours to connect at times and then I am sitting in front of the computer waiting and waiting for a page to load. Has gotten to the point where I just close the window sometimes and log off. Those with dsl or satellite or even fast dial up don't have any idea of the tortoise pace, we dial up users with slow connections endure and what we simply have to miss out on for the sake of our own sanity. For anyone who doesn't know, Homesteading Today is fairly large. There are many smaller forums that focus on specific subjects like gardening, poultry, alternative energy, and pets to name a few. Click on our logo and you'll be taken to the index
