If you have Hartford Insurance thru AARP

Hello, Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone with The Harford thru AARP that you should be getting other quotes certainly after a year or two. We had wonderful rates the first couple of years but last year we paid probably $150 more than we should have because I did not pay attention and get other quotes. This year's homeowner's policy came in with a 30% increase, needless to say I got on the phone and "puter. Found that a local agency using Erie could give us even slightly better coverage for $500 less than Hartford for homeowners and auto. Don't get comfortable..keep checking on these companies! A distant but still in state Allstate agency came within a few dollars but I decided to stay local. It took 2 days of phone work but worth it. Sure hopes this helps someone else.

Yeah, Liese, we found that to be true also. First year rates were great and then we got an increased rate the 2nd year $200/more!

Aarp and con game goes together

AARP claims to be a champion for retired people. What they are is a insurance company, check them out. In my book its one of the biggest scams going. Join up and send us money and we will do all this wonderful stuff for you, like sell you insurance at a bargin rate, yeah for the first year and since you are old and afraid you might get cancelled they go up and up and up on the rates. Remember they are not your friend and are not on your side.

I agree with Shadow. AARP is not *for* us elderly! Even the investment company (I forget which) charges higher rates than others. I used to just send in my $$ - no more!
Too bad so many, especialy those on fixed incomes, are not as informed as you, Liese. Thanks for the "heads-up".

It's not just Hartford (though all my policies are through them)--or AARP--the insurance rates are WAY down across the board. Just calling your insurance agent and having them review your policies. Between my homeowners, auto, and business insurances (liability and worker's comp.), I saved probably over $1000 a year, and that was after actually (and substantially) increasing the coverage on some of the policies, and all it took was a 10 minute phone call.
