Squirrels in the dryer
A friend has a problem with squirrels entering through her dryer vent. Can I just put some wire mesh over the vent on the outside? Will it interfere with lint/trapping?
Thanks all!

It should be fine. I'm not sure I'd use screen but wire mesh will work. I'd take a look at it after a day or two and make sure its not clogging up.

I'll repeat, not screening, hardware cloth. Screen would clog up way to fast (you'll have to keep an eye on the hardware cloth as well. This is particularly a problem if you have a natural gas or propane dryer as the vent is also the exhaust for the fumes.

They make a cover that goes over the vent. I've got several. You should be able to get one at TSC or Home Depot.
It looks like this:

If you want one and can't find one locally, PM me and I will send you one for the cost of the postage. I have a friend in construction and they have lots.

You would have to clean any type pf screen. Takes about 15 seconds. Twice a year.

So, can they use the squirrels to power the dryer? Couldn't resist
A small piece of chicken wire should work. Big enough holes not to catch lint. Too small for the squirrels to get through.

yes, powering a dryer with squirls is very easy but requires some expensive equiptment to get started
simply toss a few hundred squirl into you anarobic digester capture the methane and use it to fuel the power generation station
i couldn't resist either

Well, I thought they could train the squirrels to do a drum roll and air dry them. LOL

Is the squirrel getting beyond the vent and coming into the house? ???
You might consider enclosing the outside of the vent with a small wire basket of some kind.

I had a similar problem with birds getting into my dryer vent. I covered the hole with hardware cloth. Chicken wire is not as strong, and wrens can get through it. I would think a squirrel might just chew right through chicken wire. I did have to clean it periodically as it tended to trap lint, but it solved the problem.

You are all wrong, squirrels should be dry cleaned.
We had a dead mouse in our dryer once, outside the drum. My husband made a small box out of hardware cloth to close the vent off from visitors. It may need cleaning every few years.
