I Found Some Marshall Pottery On Sale!

I'm feeling pretty proud just because I swallowed real hard and bought what I wanted. A local hardware store is closing - I'm really sorry about that because it's such a neat place that sold things you can't find anywhere else - and they are clearing out all of their stock.

I got a 5 gallon churn, 2 gallon crock, 1 gallon crock and a butter bowl with lid for $121 plus tax. I've been watching the prices on these things for a while and hand thrown stoneware is pretty high. Lehman's stuff is way out of my league, money-wise.

They still have some small pieces like 2 qt. crocks but I don't know what I would use those for. Any ideas on the smaller pieces?

I live only 20 miles from where they make the stuff, and have never visited. One of the owners of Marshall Pottery is a co-owner of the ritzy housing development that my land borders on two sides.

The owner got into trouble last year or the year before....got caught importing mexican mass produced stuff, and was painting? or slipping? and refiring, without letting know end consumers it wasn't completely Marshall Pottery (usa) made... something like a 70k fine.... big whoopdidooo... him and his brother sold some gas wells for ~160M a few years back.

I think that Phil is talking about Marshall pottery, which is known to be the world's largest manufacturer of red clay pottery. I think there is a much smaller Marshall pottery in MS. Anyone?

It's Cathey-Fullingem Hardware on Polk Street in downtown Amarillo, Texas. It's been there forever and was the only place I could find a canner last year. I'm really sorry to see it go. They were a real old style hardware store.

Yup, that's the one. I've never been through it but I've seen their pottery for years. It seems like there are so few places that still make the crocks and churns anymore. I jumped at the chance to get a few pieces while they're discounted.

I bought a couple of pieces of Marshall Pottery at that same store in Amarillo a few years ago. Too bad it's closing. I now live in NC. We did go through Marshall and went through the pottery place there.

Hey, this Minnesotan has been to Marshall Pottery in Marshall Texas! WIHH's oldest son lived in Marshall. I thought all of their prices were inexpensive. It's a great place to visit.

Compared to what I've seen online, they are a little cheaper. Might be even less if you can buy at their factory. The one time I was in Marshall was about 20 + years ago and I didn't know about them then.

C Katie,
Re: the smaller crocks. I use one for the nicer kitchen utensil on the counter. I use the other for ripening sourdough. I LOVE crocks. I use a 5 gal. for kindling and have turned a 20 gal upside down in the loft for an end table.

I agree though, it is a sad day to see a good hardware close its doors.

Sourdough! Perfect idea! I wanted to find some practical uses before I got too carried away with buying these. They didn't have any of the bigger size crocks left by the time I heard they were closing. I went back and forth on the churn but figure this may be the only time I have a chance to get one of the bigger ones. Who knows, someday I may actually get to use it!

My dad used to live in Elysian Fields and I LOVE Marshall Pottery!! That sure is a score, Calico Katie. I have a five gallon pickle crock that I guard with my life every year. When the pickles are done, back in the attic it goes!

It's always sad to see the old hardware stores close. I know Lowe's and Home Depot have a place, but when I need help, I always go to our local hardware store. I've actually had to ask other customers for help at Lowes!
