Old Cat - where is the best place to list for sale?

We purchased a 1947 little gas powered crawler with a straight blade which we used when we first purchased our property. Now we are finished with any projects that this Cat would be used for, and want to sell it. We listed it in our regular paper with no response, and listed it under Farm Equipment in the Capital Press (western farm paper), with no response.

Any ideas of the best avenue of where to list this Cat for selling? It is an old Army Corp of Engineers crawler - has treads, not tires, runs off gas, not diesel, and is pretty small.

Thanks,
Cindy in Oregon

Did you try one of those gazette style newsprint mags that advertise, boats, or Rv's or Farm equipment? Sometimes you don't have to pay, unless it sells.

What type is it? You might want to go to the specialty site for restorers of that brand.

'Heavy & Industrial Equipment' or 'Tractors' is usually where a crawler is listed in the Capital Press.

When I'm looking under 'Farm Equipment' I am scanning the ads for cultivators, plows etc.

There was someone with an ad every week looking to buy old crawlers, at the end of the Heavy and Industrial Equipment listing. "Wanted old Cats all models..."

old cat

thank you all for the great suggestions. The rep at Capital Press had suggested the Farm equip. listing - we just took her advice. Wrong advice - and they are usually so good! I haven't had a need to buy the capital press for a while since pretty much all my guineas have been killed off by neighbors dogs - so haven't run an ad for keets for years. I'll have to pick up another.

I haven't seen the type of magazine around that was suggested. We just have a Trader type of magazine, and you have to pay for those ads. Once we had done the reg. newspaper and the cap/press, we figured there might be something better than typical ad's for getting it sold.

We are going to list it for $3,500.00. It is a handy little cat and is easy to transport. Perfect cat for someone who is familiar with using the straight blade style and wants something little. We'll be buying a 4 wheeler to use around the farm in its place now that we are past the heavy equipment phase of developing our property.

I'll check out the barter site, and if anyone knows of another on-line site for listing this type of thing, please let me know the address of the site.

Thanks again so much for your input.

I love the Capital Press! Just bought a 10ft wide 9 shank 3pt chisel plow for $450 out of it.

Where are you located, Cindy?

Hey.

Try selling it on Ebay if nothing else works.

You might give www.ironplanet.com a shot. They have real time auctions (usually on Thursdays) and frequently have 6,000 - 7,000 viewing or try the owner auctions which close daily.

I saw an ad in The Capital Press for a gas AC crawler for $3500 under antique equipment--wondering if that is yours?

If it is an Allis-chalmers crawler you can list it in a posting for FREE at this website Just click on discussion forums on the homepage.

It is the unofficial Allis-Chalmers website and they are fanatic about anything AC. You have a good chance of selling it there.

You have a good chance of selling it if it is a Cat also, but these guys love their orange toys!

Only call it a Cat if it is a Cat brand. Some folks get kinda fussy on the brand thing.

I too was puzzled by the subject line - I was hoping it was a machine.

www.ytmag.com has free classified area - they specialize in older farm machinery collectors, you machine might fit in well there. Don't put an ad in the discussion forums there, but look for the classified area. You can put up a pic if you have one there. Be prepared for spams from out-of-country buyers sending you a big check & you send some money back - unfortunately those are common all over the internet & just have to be smart enough to ignore that junk.

www.tractorhouse.com is quickly becoming _the_ ag ad place for farm equipment. I think they are free if you are not a dealer, but don't get mad if I'm wrong on that.

www.ironsearch.com, onlinetrader.com, and several others are out there.

I know ag sites better than others.

Most regoins (1/2 state to 3 states in size) have a most favored tabloid or free shopper type of paper that all farmers get & use to find such items. You gotta look for that one in your region! Local sale will be a lot less hassle then someone from Indiana wanting to buy your machine & trying to arrange shipping with you, etc. Here I would put it in 'The Land' and 'The Minnesota Farm Guide' here for me. You need to find your versions local to you.
