When I was a kid on the Oregon Coast, we built a 'fort' in a big old decayed cedar stump. It was close to eight feet across, and all hollowed out in the middle. It would be fun to live in a big stump like that, but you'd have a hard time finding one big enough for a house anymore. Either they aren't allowed to grow to that size, or they are protected.

Interesting info Wyld. Something tells me I'll have a hard time fitting inside any of the scrub oaks I've got around here, no matter how much hollowing out I do.

Not exactly the same thing, but the stump houses made me think of it... I recently found a treehouse builder's website where they make all their treehouses as 'fantastic' building sitting on top of their own hollowed out stumps. The stump usually serves as a stair area and support for the main treehouse structure but a few are large enough that they are rooms in themselves.

Here were a couple interesting ones...

for you log home lovers...

As a kid we got to run thru a lot of woods our lake(man Made ) and filled in the early 60's had a 63 mile shore line. In one of the wooded areas we found an old oak. It was hollow on the inside. Four of us could sit inside quite comfortably. As the years went on we once found some baby coons there. It was mid day and we took em to raise. Mine was a great pet. That tree may well still be there as it was on goverment land after the lake filled.
