Planning your homestead and branyard

This looks to be a useful resource for those building or adding to their homestead.

I haven't explored the whole site yet. I was searching for info on New England connected farmhouses/barns.

The advice it gives about keeping all the outbuildings on a line square with the house is very true.

Our neighbor's old farm is set on a very small flat piece of land between steep mountainsides. They have many out buildings. I've often looked at it and thought "how come there are so many buildings there and yet it doesn't look crowded. It all looks balanced and "right". Well, after reading that website I went and looked. Sure enough they are all built squared up with the house and each other.

Our barn is set way back but it too is lined up with the side wall of the house.

Those old timers knew a few things!
