Meat bags

I am really ignorant when it comes to processing my homegrown meat. I want to get some meat bags to freeze my pork sausage. What kind of store would sell bags? like the kind they use for ground up venison.. is there a type of local store that sells it or do i have to only buy online? I prefer to find a store if possible

The white freezer paper is better than the bags. The stores use the bags because they are cheap and easy, not better.

the wife first wraps with the Saran type product to get the air removed from the package then whe wraps with the white freezer paper. I have no idea what the white paper does but the end product holds up very nicely. I do not argue with success.

Vacuum sealed bags are by far the best method, especially for longevity of storage. Our local locker now does vacuum sealed. I do most of my own in vacuumed sealed. It is much more expensive than freezer paper, but you will not get freezer burn, and the meat will taste just as fresh 2 years later (if you should leave it that long).

Ummmmmmmm, nope. Plastic will always freezer burn first. They do it because it is cheap and sell it as something that is "better".

Just my two centavos
I work in a butcher shop and we vaccum pack as well as plastic/paper wrap and the vaccum packed meat stays much fresher (as long as you have a good seal)- the plastic bags are very thick and the meat does not get freezer burned. And the bags are definitely not cheap.

Agmantoo, you have a good point there. I too wrap meat up similar for my customers who bring me a deer to process for them. Except if you are first placing the meat in either syran wrap or some type of plastic bag then you can get by with just double wrapping in plain white paper. It doesn't have to be freezer paper. It will save you a little bit of money as the plain white wrapping paper is cheaper per roll then freezer paper is.

The plastic film holds the freshness in while the paper wrap keeps the frost away.

Chickenlittle, I order a lot of my supplies from Eldons sausage supply. They have several variaties of bags for burger and sausage. Also, stuffers and tie wraps to make the job faster. Do a google search for their website. I've been doing business with them for years both through catalogue orders, website, and over the phone. I have never had any trouble with them, and they are just about the cheapest place to order from.

Ummmm Yep. I have had it done both ways in the last 6 years. The freezer paper stuff is good for a few months before getting freezer burn. Two years ago, we put 3 hogs in the freezer (vacuum sealed). We are still eating some of that, and it has no freezer burn on it. I could I suppose resort to scientific information, but will leave it at this. Anyone who has tried vacuum sealing knows it is better.

I originally wanted to vacuum seal but the one we own is missing the rubber seal on it so it no longer works. I kept trying to win a replacement off ebay of the same brand so i can use my current one as replacement parts , but i kept getting outbidded so I thought maybe another angle would be easier.

I guess i will look back into getting the foodsaver again. I have 2 pigs to get into the freezer and i wanted a big portion to be sausage as its something we eat a lot of . Freezer paper box says pork only lasts 3-6 months in it and we definately cannot eat 2 pigs that fast so i needed something a bit better/longer lasting
