Talking And a bull!

Two heifers and a bull in one week! One cow left to calve but she doesn't look like she'll go for a while. The bull calf was born Wednesday but I'm slow to get pics up. The calves are romping and playing together and driving their mothers crazy with worry.

Rex with mom Suzie, a non-polled Hereford.

How old was Buster when the picture was taken? He don't look like he's 2 years old yet.
The exiting thing with raising your breed of cattle is finding out if the new babies are Herefords or Hefords. LOL

That picture of Buster was taken this week. He'll be 2 this spring. We're planning to hold off breeding back until slightly better weather. This breeding was a bit early. Me last spring: Don't you think we ought to separate that bull until summer? DH: Nah, he's not old enough to breed yet. Fortunately it all worked out ok. Hyacinth is a bit younger than we really like to breed too. She's just a little older than Buster. Turned out the only problem was where we least expected. The Highlander's calf was breech - our 14 yr old son pulled that calf out. He's the only one who can really get close to her.

Some people like FEb calves but Feb weather isn't too great for the newborns. Early calves are really big when the pasture is gone in the fall. That's when many around here wean them and sell them so it don't take so much hay through the winter. Nce looking calves.
Question - Does the cow with the long horns boss the others around? Her horns look like genuine bear killers.

She is second cow. First cow has yet to calve. She doesn't seem to bother the others much with those horns. Mostly she kills trees and shakes them at things that annoy her (like dogs).

I like Glory, she has a nice stocky build, was the cross (hereford x highland) on purpose?

Yes. That is the only bull we have and I'm not interested in getting a second bull for one cow. DH wanted the Highlands but I don't care for them. Since he's not the one that ends up working with them I've discouraged further additions. She is registered so it is kind of too bad not to breed to another Highland but I don't want a bazillion of the things around here either.

Nice cattle...and those white-face/hereford calves are always cute!

Thanks for sharing.
