Another Florida thread...

I didn't want to hijack Sue's thread so I started a new one. The Keys have always fascinated me (probably because of them being 'Fishing Central'). I'm curious if folks find the Islands to be the same, better or worse than the peninsula... I know the cost of living is pretty outrageous, but how about climate, populous and pests in the Keys?

They're the hardest place to leave when the hurricanes come...
And you have to leave for most of them.
That gets old very very fast.

Bill, I lived in florida for 18 years and fished it hard. Thanks to the U.S. Coast Guard I had an opportunity to live six different places in Florida. During my 18 years I commerical fished and tournament fished all saltwater. I was on the water 3 to 4 days a week. Fishing in the Keys is over-rated and just a dream to most. My preference is the Indian River or Banana River on the East Coast or Pensacola Bay in the panhandle. To a tourist the Keys rock, to a real southern fisherman the Keys are boring and way to windy. The only thing I miss about Florida is the fishing, you can keep the rest...Go Tennessee.

The keys do not have nice sand beaches, rock. Also growing plants have to be salt resistant. Too many tourists. Only one road in and out. Nice to visit.

Well first off I have to say I haven`t been back to South Florida since 1979,I was raised in Miami/Kendall..but it was way different back then..my parents had close friends in Key Largo so just about every sunday we`d drive down. They had a charter diving boat and also my Dad and his buddy taught diving at Coral Reef Club(I wonder if it`s still even there?).Back then the fish and lobster were plentiful(spear fishing mostly). As a kid I`d snorkle around the reefs watching the fish that were being caught. Those are some of my most vivid memories,I was always in awe at the beauty. When us kids got a little older we had our own little skiff and we played around with the neighborhood wild porpoise(really) and snorkled in Lake Surprise which was actually an inlet I`m guessing..since there was "fields" of HUGE brain Coral. When we all got older. still....it was cool sippin`tropical drinks from our boats at one of the many tiki bars, while groovin to Steely Dan or Jimmy Buffet.
To answer your questions:
Yeah,it`s HOT and humid, but in FLA there`s always some water to jump in!
As far as population I`m sure it`s Overcrowded though you can still find SOME solitude and decent land prices in some parts of florida,I`m just not gonna say where...lol
Pests??...I once broke down near dusk in the keys and went to get out of my car...and was immediatly COVERED by mosquitos..and i mean COVERED..maybe they have that under control nowdays...but i kinda hope not...those chemicals can`t be good for the enviorment.
Well thanks for the flashback...I hope I`ve helped a little

Thanks for the replies folks. Anyone spent enough time there to know about the POPULOUS - the folks that live there? I've found that in areas dependent on tourism most of the permanent residents live there because they choose to, not because they're stuck. So you end up with a populous that is pretty happy about where they are and what they're doing...
