Land in Canada
Just out of curiousity, does anyone know what good, homestead-worthy land goes for in Canada? I'm not really thinking of moving... I just want to find out. Prices around here make me keel over in surprise half the time!

where are we talking? Central Vancouver island on the west coast 5 acre plots 200,000-300,000 1/2 acre now goes for $100,000. hit the mainland and head up north and you can have a completely off grid 1000 sqft home with 20ish acres for under $200,000. Hit saskatchewan and some lots are under $1000 if you promised to build within a year.
I use
www.mls.ca for across the country searching

A few yrs ago(9) I bought 41 acres,3brm house completely liveable,barn,60x40 metal drive building,30x40 metal workshop fully insulated and several out buildings for $41K.had about 20 acres pasture and the rest bush/poplar in Manitoba.winters are hard but the people were the best I ever met. We,d still be there if the place didn,t burn down and the bank wouldn,t renew our mortgage cause I didn,t have a "real" job..even tho the mortgage was ALWAYS paid on time.

The more "rural", the cheaper the prices. If you'd like to live simply, there are lots of places in northern Ontario with wood/water/fish-game - at extremely reasonable prices with extremely low taxs.
Up there, there is alot of land and relatively few people, so seeing 160 acres of "brush lot" (maybe enough trees to keep a home heated forever) for $8k is not unheard of. $40k would probably buy improved land with small house/cabin - a building or two. It all depends on how improved the land is and where it is located.

A nice and tidy but not extravagant five acre hobby farm will run you a minimum of 500K in my neck of the woods. Rural prices go up from there.

It's relatively cheap in Nova Scotia, I've seen small farms going for 39K Canadian, with house. I saw the ads at: www.acountrylife.com. The editors of this newsletter moved from Wales to Nova Scotia, tell you how to emigrate, etc. Also, just a great site, like HT! ldc

In my area good land will cost you 10-12K an acre for 5-20 acre plots. McMansions and 5 acre lawns have prices going up.

any land could be 'homesteadworthy' depending on what you can put up with.
Winters are long and cold in this neck of the woods, Northen Ontario. Land prices vary. Good agricultural land that is developed isn't cheap. Any lakefront or island properties are very expensive due to the summer resident populaton that visit them using them for recreation. Off grid, way out in the bush is crown land and not 'buyable'. Where there is deeded land, you need to develop it to live there. That could be quite a sum of investment to be 'livable'. A relative from californial visited here once in summer. The mosquitos almost ate them alive, they complained of the heat and humidity, bugs and poor growing conditions compared to where they lived. It's far from city for conveniences they took for granted. Made me tired trying to figure out what next little thing they were complaining about, such as the mice getting into their new vehicle and chewing up the maps in the glove box. Then at the winter holidays they visited the reality of the cold, and asked how long that lasted. Well, winter is only 9 months of the year, and after that, it's good sledding. lol. But seriously, if you can't take the cold as if you were living in the yukon or alaska, you should give it second thoughts about the 'cheap land' or if you like low lying mosquito infested wetlands, it might be your 'thang'. The rest of the 'livable' steads are as many suggest for price, and depending how close to the big cities.
We don't really call it 'homesteading' as much as just surviving a lot of the time, paying high heating bills, or pushing a lot of snow around, and making sure the screens in the windows keep out the hoards of mosquitos in summer.

I just bought seven acres with several outbuildings and a solid century home in south-central Manitoba for $65,000. We had looked for years in BC -- couldn't afford what it would have cost us either for a developed property or to develop one.
My dad is in Muskoka in Ontario (lake and cottage country) and the properties there are stupidly expensive. If you weren't a property owner already, you'd better be rich if you plan on buying -- or ready to live in a swamp. The further north you go in Ontario, it seems the more affordable things get, but the growing season shortens dramatically, so homesteading becomes challenging
In the Maritime provinces, you can buy property relatively cheaply, but there are few jobs. And you'd better like snow
In Saskatchewan there are a LOT of small acreages with houses, but the taxes in the province will kill you. I paid the same amount of property taxes on a $65000 property in Regina as my brother was paying on a half-million dollar property in Toronto.
As in any other place, it varies. Canada is a VERY big country... no two places will have the same challenges, and therefore, prices vary unbelievably.

alot of that depends on where you are at in Saskatchewan. we are about 110 k out of Regina
The RM we are in taxes are not bad
We Bought 44 acres with a 5 bedroom 2 story homes Built in the 1889.
Has a 60x80 barn built in 1927. and alot of out buildings. The cost was $48,000.00 and Our taxes are $400.00 a year.
The good part is the nearest neighbors are atleast 2 miles either direction.
There is a place over in Indian head Sk that is about 45 minutes from regina that we have been looking at it is 130 acres barn and out buildings and a 3 bedroom single level house built 1978 in wonderful shape. that they want $120,000.00 for and the Taxes for it are $1400.00. Rural property taxes are not bad unless you are close to the bigger city's
To the OP
There are alot of reasonable property's in canada but check on any hidden cost.
Here is a place that has 159 acres and not a bad price
