Over a foot of snow and cold...

Biggest storm I've seen in a while. Spent the day plowing neighbors drives and pulling people out of ditches.

Welcome to my world

S. Alberta is NOT used to this much snow -- we've gotten probably a good foot over the last week. There is far, far too much of it, in any case, and all those silly drivers of SUVs are making the roads even more dangerous than the ice.

And I have to drive through Calgary tomorrow

every time it snows around here. I get to go do "ditch work"

We only got 8 inches in about 6 hours (big snow to us).

Plenty of ditch work. I have the ditch. Iy you go off the road in my land area, you are not driving out. That simple. Just the wat the ditch is here.

I get many DUI wrecked every year. I would say I get to see .8-1.0 dead a year in my ditches.

When it snows like this. Its normally resonable folks that just lost it that close to home.

I hook to them and herk them out.

If they are goobered up. I charge big time. I have made 400 bucks to pull a car out of the ditch on a fall night after the bar closed.

I have also been the poor guy that had to take a pound of pot from a car before the cops got there. I mean I sure do not want the poor kids to get a charge they will never get rid of on their record. Of course I called the sheiffs. Before I went to vist them. I even seen the deer they were trying to dodge.

One thing you do not want to do is end up on someones land at 3am. THEY HOLD THE CARDS OR THE gun IN YOUR FACE.

It's 12º here with a wind chill of -3º. We have at least a foot of snow on the ground and the northern half of our county is under a snow emergency. We've had winds of up to 30 miles an hour and as a result, the drifts are over five feet high.

We've finally gotten snow. We only had about 12" of packed snow on the ground, usually by now we have 3 or 4 feet of snow. Last night we got 18" of new snow and it is still snowing hard. The temperature right now is 1.0°F which is unusually low for a strong snow storm. We're hoping for more snow. Otherwise it could be a dry year as the spring melt is a big source of water to recharge the mountain.

Cheers,

-Walter

Up to the top of the front bumper on my Accent -- up to the color-coordinated trim (used to be chrome) on the door panels. Plow went thru -- about 3 hours later than it usually does. Snow was pouring over the top of the blade like a waterfall. Left at least a 4-foot heap at the end of the drive -- about up to the top of the hood on the car.

I guess-timate it's at least 9 inches out there and the highest amount of snowfall is supposed to come between now (8:00 AM) and 2:00 this afternoon.

I went out and swept a path to the car and cleaned the car off and a path around it. Waiting for the snowplow guy to come do the drive and if I catch him, I will move the car out so he can get at the whole drive -- it will need it! I can't go anywhere until he gets here -- but I don't intend to try to get out today. The roads are too bad. Most everyone on my street is still home. Even the Day Care Lady next door doesn't have any kiddies to watch - none of them turned up yet - probably won't. All the schools in the whole area are closed -- lots of other stuff, too! Even some courts, etc. - which is unusual!

How's everyone else making out?

I'm so jealous. In terms of cold, this has been one of the coldest winters in Minnesota in several decades. In terms of snow, this has been the whimpiest winters in my lifetime....only ~4" on the ground!

come on you know illinoi is just like wis you can have your gun and but you can't actualy shoot anyone not just for being there not even for stealing not even if they are stealing your truck and your favorite dog is in the back.

not untill your life or the life a family member is in danger and even then you dam well better not do it beond the threshold of your door.

what do you think your living in florida

and realy if they weren't breaking the law the only card you would hold is the ability to sue them for crop or property damage they could call a tow truck to come fetch them even if they made it more than a hundred yards onto your land as long as the sherrif escorts the tow truck driver on he can pull them out and all you can do is calculate the damage and sue the driver for it. the sherif could charge the driver with trespassing but if they make a reasonable attempt to leave when fist notified that they were tresspassing like calling a tow truck and the sherif ther is not much you can do leagaly

now you do have the upper hand because most of the people in this situation were likely breaking the law and or are scared ----less of you .

They closed school, plus the library where I work. Hubby works 40 miles away, so he's staying home today. It's actually been fun for us! Last night my husband pulled a couple of neighbors out of ditches, plus plowed our place and his sisters. This morning we all went out and did chores and it was great. The German Shepherds were all up to their bellies in snow and were smiling and leaping around like it was the best weather ever. It was about 12 degrees at 7:30, and I was downright sweaty in my coveralls and hunting coat! Walking in snow past your knees is a great workout. LOVIN it!

Glad to see others getting snow too. We've had about 30" since the last of Dec. and upsets me to see our cattle have to endure this hard winter. We haven't lost any but our client, wintering on our cornstalks, lost 2 pregnant mama cows......just makes me sick. We sent them all home to Wyoming early or would have lost more. If we didn't have animals, I wouldn't mind the snow/cold.

We barely got a sprinkling here. Of course, on top of the several feet we've already gotten this year... I'm glad. Cuz we're moving in 2 weeks and that would be a whole lot more difficult with a bunch of new snow.

What I wouldn't give for that much snow right now.

Over a foot of snow and cold... - Homesteading Questions

Tha'ts the view out my front door about 5 minutes ago -

Spent the morning shoveling the snow/ice off the deck:
Our foot of snow has a 1 inch layer of ice on top of it with more snow on top of that
I was worried the ice might be too heavy for the deck

Just got back inside from getting hubby out of the driveway - oh my!
We don't have a plow & our neighbor hasn't been here yet - he probably thinks we're smart enough to stay home
We had to shovel paths in the snow/ice & hubby made about 10 runs up & down the driveway - each time breaking through more ice with the tires
What drama!!
I guess we have now learned our lesson in the importance of getting our own plow!

snowing hard here in western NY, supposed to dump 2-3 feet by tomorrow morning, about a foot on the gound now. warmed up to +4 degrees. All the schools are closed, travel ban in the surrounding counties. The ditches here are all filled with snow as well, mounded a bit from the plow. This is how winter is supposed to be, I like it.
