gray chicken?
Hi, I don't post often, but I read all the time. I am a fairly new farmer. We have had hens in the past, while living in Los Angeles. Our move to Vancouver Island BC saw us needing to order our chicks and except them unsexed. So with an order of 30 chicks we ended up 15 roosters. Now as I said, we're new, so not quite up to the task of butchering our own yet (maybe never), which means I drove them about twenty five minutes down the road to the processing plant. Now some of these birds were done at about three and a half months and some at about 8 months. I know, not good for much, but I pulled one out of the freezer to make some stock today and one breast and leg were a dark gray black. I peeled back the skin and sliced into the flesh and sure enough it goes clear through. Any ideas? We did have a power outage but it was the middle of the night and we never opened the freezer. I rebagged it and will take it with me to my woolgatherers meeting on Monday as there are some wise chicken folk there. Thanks for any advice you may have.
