Roofing Help Needed

We have three cornices on the front of our house that we are going to have to replace or repair. They have a slanted "roof" to keep the pigeons off that seems to be covered in tar paper only with maybe some knid of coating over that. Is this what we should go back with or is there a different covering we should use?

If there are granules about pencil lead size in diameter its known as rolled roofing. 33&1/3rd feet per roll 3 feet wide, a second type is called single ply and there is a specialty torch needed to install it over the base (well nailed) sub layer. Tar paper alone is not long lasting in the application.

Here, where we get constant high temps and then afternoon shower during summer months caused rolled roofing to fail quite often, some times only a few years. Is the area constantly shaded? If so it will add to longer life.

I personally would cover with new felt if underlament is good and then cut sheet metal to cover using UV protected silicone seal whereever joints are. and overlap appropriately. BUT, I'm just a handyman....not a roofer. I work mostly on my own stuff which holds up well. Don't like doing things twice. The jobs I've done in the last 15 years for other people are still fine. No call-backs. I like to build things so I don't EVER have to "fool with them again".

Thanks for the replies!

Moopups - right now it's not covered with the rolled roofing. We have that on the back stoop roof that we also have to replace. That hasn't done very well out there.

Junkmanme - DH was thinking about using a metal covering. Wish you were closer, we could use the help of a "handyman"!!
